What do you mean by wanting to be near amenities? If that means walkable Florida is likely not for you, excluding Miami, it’s a driving place.

This is a good recommendation. Ponte Vedra is great, too. I think Jax is relatively underrated, which means it should get expensive soon with all the FL growth.

We're buying in Punta Gorda. No beach but great boating access to islands from the harbor.

Anonymous wrote:You don’t say much about what you’re looking for. Florida is a huge state. Do you want beach access? If being on the coast isn’t important to you, look into Gainesville area. It’s a great small city, only 1.5 hr drive to the beach (st Augustine) so you can still easily do that but not have the worries and costs associated w living on the coast (hurricanes, higher insurance rates, higher housing costs, etc). You are only 2 hrs drive to Tampa area or Orlando area. There’s a nice college town feel with a lot of smart, well educated people working at or attending the university or coming there for the university and then staying. Low COL compared to areas like Miami or Tampa or Naples.

I loved living in Gainesville and wound up staying there for years after I graduated from UF so I’ve lived there as a student and non student. I think it’s a great place to retire to…if only Florida overall wasn’t such a horrible place (politically). But I guess if you don’t have school age kids you might be able to kind of ignore that.

Love the GNV. I hope to god I never have to move back to Florida but if I do the only place I’d love is Gainesville.

Have you spent time in S Fl lately? Im a native of WPB now living in DC, and sad to see how much it has changed. Old Florida charm has been overrun by north easterners. Things are now really expensive, traffic is heavy, and lots of rude aggressive people. Not what it used to be.

Don't need the beach; we just want to stop paying state income tax and escape the dark DC winters. Thank you!

PS - I'm Republican so FL politics are not a problem.

For you, Viera.

Harbor Island/Tampa

It is youthful. A lot of the professional athletes live on the island. There are many walkable restaurants.

St Pete, specifically the Old Northeast section. Lived there for a couple of years. Very walkable, a few museums, downtown has increasing # of restaurants, beach is 20 - 30 minutes.

I was going to say Sarasota but on second thought maybe not, there are already way too many people moving here because it is so great.

Vero Beach is very nice too, go there!
