I am an attorney in government agency that advocates for consumers. This absolutely happens. Always negotiate your medical bill. Our former nanny recently went to the ER and got all these bogus charges in her bill. She has a health insurance plan with a high deductible. I put her in touch with my friend who negotiates medical bills constantly as part of his job. One threatening call from him and her bill was reduced by 1/3rd. Always negotiate your bills if you have a high deductible. This is what insurance does constantly.

Easy to do a google search. Hospital billing fraud, medicare fraud, etc.

60 Minutes has done one or two stories on hospital administrators & billing fraud.

You are wrong. There are professionals who make a living negotiating hospital bills for others.

Consumer advocates advise people to challenge & negotiate hospital bills. This is not new.

I don’t work in a hospital but I do have similar experience. My spouse spent 8 hours ignored on a stretcher in the ER with a serious injury in a DC area hospital. (Ended up with an emergency transfer elsewhere because of poor treatment) Once he was well enough (was in hospital for two weeks) we complained. Not only did they waive the bill but they paid us a mid six figure settlement if we signed a NDA. This was without a lawyer or any prolonged negotiation. Obviously I’m not going to share any more details but I completely believe this.
