Kid wanted Data Science but had to go to CS School. Can’t get into CS school as an internal transfer. UMD will be a decline for kid.

Anonymous wrote:Yes, my DD was offered spring admission. Gee, I thought her scores were pretty good. 4.68 Weighted, 3.98 1400 SAT APS with 5 's ya da da da da .
Not sure she'll go.
Anonymous wrote:It sounds like spring admission is in name only - since the students live on campus and take classes (albeit in the afternoon!) like everyone else. I would understand spring admission - if student offered a spot starting Jan. 2025. Why is this process more complicated than it needs to be - not just at UMD but elsewhere?

Her story is like a lot of others--good grades, rigorous courses, good AP scores and she attends a competitive high school (in Howard County). She didn't submit an SAT score. She is annoyed that she didn't get in for fall, but after realizing that several the other kids in her art class were also admitted for spring semester she feels good about being able to go to UMD in the fall. We are anxious to see what course options she'll have since she's already completed some courses through AP exams and community college classes.

Why? Personally, I'd rather my child have the option to go at all (should they choose), and I knew that their stats were not an automatic admission for fall.
The other option for the "spring start" (but really fall start) kids isn't denial (UMD needs the tuition), it's acceptance. This is just a shady play by UMD to game the rankings.
Many schools do this. Some have their own programs for the kids in the fall that are required (think NEU the NUIn/NU Global scholars or NUBOund) , others you just have the option to take classes elsewhere. Yes, it "games the rankings" a bit, but really it's about backfilling the slots of kids who drop out after fall semester. It's a guaranteed Transfer in program that ensures the college has enough students paying tuition come spring (and the next fall). It's not unique to UMD. [/quote
No many schools do not do it this way.
They start kids in the summer which is way better.
Starting class at 4 in the afternoon no thanks. Plus Business majors end up at Shady Grove again nope.
Wrong! My business major is not at Shady Grove. She takes all her classes at the Robert H Smith business school building on campus.
Freshman connection classes can be any time of day on Fridays and as early as 3 on M-Th. My daughter finished all classes by dinner time and loved the schedule.
Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:Yes -- students can attend in the fall, and live in the dorms, and take classes. Be a freshman just like every other freshman.
But the classes are in the afternoon. Slightly smaller choice of classes.
It's a way to offer admission to students who would otherwise be deferred because of slightly weaker test scores or GPAs.
NO
They have very special dorms for these kids and they are insanely expensive.
And this is a stupid program always has been. It has changed a little of the years . I would never let my kid do this. Penn State and UF do it better by starting kids in the summer.
