The term is "redshirt". If you search for "redshirt" on this site, you will find literally dozens and dozens of long threads on this issue in this forum, in the Elementary Age Children forum, and in the Private School forum.

I don’t think so. There are a lot of properly placed August and September birthdays in schools these days. I am a teacher and it’s not as common as you think.
Are people here actually successful in this for prek3? Or are they just commenting because they did it elsewhere and had a good experience? I know one person who repeated prek3 but they had a pretty good reason and full support from the school. I am not saying your reason isn’t valid, but the admin will likely not be concerned about your desire to not send your child to college at 17.
I have 2 kids with September birthdays and would consider a gap year for them if they don’t seem ready. They are fine so far.
That is a really tough time to repeat a grade. If she is “shaky” socially and emotionally, I’m not sure having to watch her entire cohort leave for HS while she stays behind to repeat the same classes. It’s not like in early elementary when kids are less attached to friendships and there may be less social stigma to repeating. Even if she has friends in the lower grade. It could hurt her a lot more than it helps.
Sometimes you just need to have faith in your kids.
+100. Repeating 8th grade will not make her an academic star. Nor will it improve her social experience. I am sort of baffled that you think either of those things is even remotely possible. Even if you have her transfer for 9th, you are likely to destroy her self confidence and make her a target. Don’t do this. This could only ever work if she switched schools for the repeated grade.
