Literally why are you on a private school thread if you complain it’s a bubble of wealth and privilege. Yes. That doesn’t mean there aren’t things to discuss.

Lower school is small and for alum kids, teach kids and sibling intakes.

Apply a different intake grade. And ask for feedback.

Say what you will, but Potomac has a seriously low admit rate. They get a LOT of applications.

And, yes, it can seem like a crapshoot, but it's a crapshoot with ALL the schools that get lots of applications unless you are connected -- and even then because there are cases where siblings are told to wait and apply again. Lots of outcomes that don't "make sense" during and after the pandemic.

FWIW we chose Potomac over the two or so more "established" schools in DC. There are plenty of people looking for an academically rigorous coed school with wonderful teachers that also cares about athletics.

For K, as many dolts, as obviously bright kids are admitted so unless your child is outlier in some capacity, it’s not them. Admissions ask where you, as the parent, went to college for a reason. And demographics play a larger role in schools that are striving more so than the older more established DC schools.

We never got in either. Lower school is a mystery. No parent interview, no essay questions, no kid testing or shadow.

Maybe IS, MS and US are actual processes.

What school did you go with?

Many schools - and I am not talking specifically about Potomac - will reject if they believe applicant is either not a good fit or is using the school as a backup.

Many schools want a high yield rate.

Most overrated school in the area.
Don’t even worry about it.

This

Not overrated. Phenomenal school. We couldn't be happier.

OP - I'm sorry your child was rejected, but happy that your DC is happy at another phenomenal school.

eh. A lot of folks think it is overrated because of the large group of parents that insist it is an elite school. But any school who would hire Ryan Woods is not elite. He is a buffoon.

In K it’s really not about the kid unless there are major behavioral red flags, and if that were the case you’d already know and wouldn’t have gotten into the other schools either. In K, schools are looking to balance certain demographics in their classes and to a degree are looking at the parents. Don’t take it personally. Maybe they had too many of your kid’s gender or color or geographic location. Or maybe they didn’t like something about you, which you can take personally if you think that’s the case, but you don’t need to be huffy on your kid’s account. You got into a great school and are happy there. Let the rest go.

This is a pretty f’d up thread. What a bubble of wealth and privilege to be able to complain about this.

It can sometimes just be luck. Not sure where things are with other schools but at Potomac between siblings, staff and alumni preferences they can have almost no slots left at the K level in any given class. At that point it can come down to gender balance of the class or diversity status.

Nothing exemplifies the madness of DCUM better than this thread.

OP, are you mad because perceive Potomac as lower in status than the other two you mention and therefore it doesn’t make sense?

I am a Potomac parent and my dc was rejected by schools that were objectively not as good, and I honestly believe it’s because admissions at those schools thought we were applying as a safety. Maybe that’s what happened here.

But regardless, your DC is enrolled in a great school and all is well, so you need to let it go. Just believe it wasn’t the right fit or meant to be. This isn’t healthy for you or your child.

It was actually your DC’s rejection, not yours. Get some therapy, OP.
