Dp. I went to Einstein in the 80's. A friend of mine brought a gun to school. It was in her locker and she showed it to me. Someone must have seen it, too, because my friend was later quietly removed from class and I never saw her again. My nephew goes to Einstein and he said there was a lockdown and a classroom was raided to arrest a student who brought a gun to school. He showed me texts from classes where they tilted tables and hid behind them. I'm not going to say which way was better, but very few children were affected, let alone knew about the gun when I was a student. Of course, no one had a cell phone then.

Crime in the county is increasing. We’re seeing a lot more violent, crimes and gun related crimes. All of that is bleeding into the schools.

This is obviously a school problem but it’s also a County problem.

Yes. Since I'm European, it's so obvious to me. And I've lived here for many years, enough to realize that this isn't an American exception, due to history, Constitution, crime, gangs, hunting etc. No, there's just a lack of willpower. The Constitution can be amended. It already has.

American here, and the Constitution doesn't even provide an unlimited right to guns. It's just that a group of zealots in this country have convinced people it says something it doesn't, and hand waives away the actual text AND the context of the 2nd Amendment, and for reasons I will never totally understand, the media and many people buy it despite the harm it's done to our country.

It's not lack of willpower -- many of us have spent DECADES fighting for gun control. But the other side is well-funded, deeply politically ensconced, and let's face it, insane. And the rest of us are held hostage by them. Most Americans support common sense gun control, just like they also support abortion rights and strong public education. The far-right in this country has become a powerful minority through voter suppression and media manipulation.

Sorry, I realize I'm ranting. It just makes me really mad when we see yet another gun incident in a school and people don't immediately recognize that the problem is TOO. MANY. GUNS.

I agree what is needed is meaningful gun control that actually reduces the guns in circulation in the broader population.

Going through a metal detector to get on a plane is burdensome but most people don't fly every day so we view it as a reasonable restriction for safety. And people who do fly a lot just pay to bypass security!

But metal detectors and "hardened" campuses would disrupt kids' daily routines. It's incredibly expensive to implement. You can't just buy metal detectors, you need the entire system -- the metal detector, minders to ensure people go through them one at a time, people who can search bags, people who can deal with malfunctioning equipment. In a school with 600 or more kids, it's a huge undertaking 5 days a week, and a massive time suck for kids. Plus, yes, unpleasant and reminder of the institutional nature of school. It will alienate a lot of kids who would never bring a gun to school.

Most of the guns kids bring to school? They got them from parents or other family members. This is the result of a high prevalence of guns in society, and it's not unique to schools. There are also too many guns at shopping malls, in public parks, on roadways, and many other public spaces that cannot afford or support the kind of security we are talking about.

Also, hardening school campuses wouldn't prevent someone from bringing a gun to school and keeping it in a car or putting hiding it outside somewhere. Also, if you have metal detectors, is someone manning it when kids leave campus and return, especially after school when many kids leave to go get food or something and then return for an activity? Do you staff them for the many evening and weekend events at schools, like school plays, games, art shows, parents nights, etc.

It's ridiculous. The problem is not inadequate security, it's TOO MANY GUNS. We need to remove a lot of guns from circulation, and magically this would result in far fewer kids bringing guns to school.

Metal detectors also don’t catch plastic ghost guns and don’t often catch even metal guns unless they are operated by skilled personnel who are already in short supply. I know people that operate metal detectors and they say it’s a huge problem when they are short staffed and they need to pull in security guards or LEO who aren’t trained and experienced in it.

Yeah, principals definitely need to be able to go back to suspending and expelling disruptive kids. The RJ and current approach is failing abysmally.

How does the Blair G. Ewing Center work? Is that the new Mark Twain? Why don't they refer more kids to that school if they behave badly?

Mark Twain was opened for kids with mild LDs. Teachers used it as a dumping ground for behavior issues so it closed down.

There is a real increase in shootings that is very concerning. But it's not just happening in schools. Getting rid of SROs did not cause it. There too many guns out there. It is horrifying. Fixating on SROs is a trap to stop people from demanding what is really needed.

Frequent lockdown drills and hardening schools is detrimental to many kids’ wellbeing (including mine). Your solution might make anxious parents feel better but we don’t know that they work and we know they cause harm.

But attacking my love for my children isn’t exactly a well-thought-out argument, so I don’t know what I expected.
