+1 good lord. All this RJ, social emotional learning, "we don't need SROs" seem to be doing jacksh1t.
-RM parent whose kids just experienced this last week.
Well look, you didn’t need an SRO. The real cops handled it just like they should.
SROs are real cops, too, and they would be in the school rather than school having to call the police which takes time. They are trained to assess risk and deal with someone with a gun better than administrators or security guards.
And since you didn't address the other part of my statement, I guess you agree: RJ and social emotional learning is BS. Get rid of it, and focus on the real issues. Huge achievement gap, violence in schools against students and staff.
Assuming SRO’s are like any cop is like saying any cop can do SWAT or murder investigations. No not all cops are the same.
SRO s are not trained to assess anything, they have literally never stopped an incident from occurring.ever.
RJ works for some and not for others. Principals need to be able to expel and moco needs to stop moving bad kids around. But that’s not new. In 1997 moco move Sheinbein from a W school to Kennedy and he killed someone’s and dismembered them.
BS they stopped a kid in Clarksburg

RJ is stupid. Get rid of it. It's not doing anything. Do you have *any* proof that it's working in MCPS? I don't think so because if it did, I'm pretty sure the pro-RJ contingent would be publicizing it like Jesus is coming back.

This is terrifying. There is no barrier or deterrence to prevent kids from bringing weapons on school grounds. Why is everyone ok with this?
We go through screening at the airport to avoid this stuff but despite countless incidents at schools, we continue to let it be a free-for-all. I guess they're waiting for enough kids to die or get hurt before they do something drastic. Even though Magruder already happened on MCPS's watch.
Wrong. There are laws, and they generally work. No need to overreact to a single rumor (which is what this is so far).
A single rumor? Are you paying attention?
Last week, Richard Montgomery was on lockdown for this same issue.

Lol, that was 1 week at RM alone in the 70’s and 80’s
The sky is falling, the sky is falling.
So you're not bothered. Noted.
The rest of us who care about our kids' wellbeing and have a moral code will continue the discussion.
I am bothered but I also don’t think the sky is falling,
You seem to lack moral codes actually.
You're talking out of both sides of your mouth. You're bothered but your response to back-to-back high school lockdowns and a laundry list of violent or threatening incidents in MCPS is that it was like this or even worse in the 70s or 80s. You're a horrible person.

What we NEED is gun control.
Yes. Since I'm European, it's so obvious to me. And I've lived here for many years, enough to realize that this isn't an American exception, due to history, Constitution, crime, gangs, hunting etc. No, there's just a lack of willpower. The Constitution can be amended. It already has.
Anonymous wrote:Absent more stricter gun control, and getting rid of guns in our society, we need more SROs. Yes, we need more police presence as a deterrence.
Sorry, but kids' safety should trump some kids' feelings.

Yeah, principals definitely need to be able to go back to suspending and expelling disruptive kids. The RJ and current approach is failing abysmally.
How does the Blair G. Ewing Center work? Is that the new Mark Twain? Why don't they refer more kids to that school if they behave badly?
Again you can’t see gray.
RJ works 90% of the time we need to fix the 20%.
Mark Twain was opened for kids with mild LDs. Teachers used it as a dumping ground for behavior issues so it closed down.
Blair g. Ewing is also not for criminals it’s for kids tfat need a more supportive environment.
RICA is even a level higher than EWING
What we need is to get rid of criminals not move them around.
