My slightly educated guess (I worked in admissions for a long time but it was 8 years ago and never in a high school that used HSPT, we used other tests) is that they'll only look beyond composite score if there's a tie breaker situation, which doesn't happen a lot, or if they need to justify an admit of a special person like an athlete or friend of board member (look! score is low but this section is high! totally makes sense to admit!). If there are enough good candidates, there's no reason to break down scores of those on the bubble. If there aren't enough good candidates, then yes, they may start looking more closely.
If you get waitlisted and you think it's something to highlight, you can keep that in your back pocket. May help get off a waitlist.


Thanks for this. Helpful. My child did well (in the 90s) on both but the TCS is higher so of course I'm hoping that matters more and it's a lock for DC's school choice!

Looks like my DC will be going to the local public. Their composite score was a 65%. The DC is currently in public w/ almost all A's, not legacy, not recruited, and not catholic.

To which schools? And from private or public middle school? Because we know everyone in public has all As. For Gonzaga and Visi and from public, I'd be very worried. From catholic k-8 I'd be a little worried. For O'Connell or Ireton you're fine regardless of your middle school.

Please don't worry - DCUM posts are not representative of general population and grades/scores are just part of the picture for the admissions team. At this point, I'm nervous but doing my best to let go, trust it will work out for the best, and try to enjoy this precious time before high school. I don't always succeed, but I'm trying, LOL! Did most of your kids with admits have all As. DC had close...3.9 GPA. Does this matter? Starting to get freaked out at the prospect of not getting in anywhere.

My DS got 88% a few years ago with all As. Still admitted to St. John's but no scholars and no honors classes. They were very strict about it from what I remember.

At our school, you need 90s in certain categories for honors English or honors bio.

It’s a solid score, but you wouldn’t get honors.
