Nanny. HHI $200k, and we spend $60k a year on our nanny. Objectively, we can’t afford her. But we sacrifice because it’s sooo much better for us. I love having the kids home - one of us WFH every day so we have an ear out. Kids get great naps in their cribs and are on a schedule dictated by us. Our nanny is wonderful and amazing. And at the end of the day, our house is neat and we don’t have to worry about packing up/getting out the door.

It’s only 18 months of having two under 3 (when it was just one kid, and again when the eldest goes to free PK-3 it’s nanny shares for us) but it’s just so so worth it.

Water bottles. I own a vast collection of Hydroflasks.

Running shoes. I buy 2 pairs of custom fit running shoes from a running store. I have a health condition that requires I adhere to a run-walk schedule and I do 5ks.

Outdoor wear. I have hiking boots, snow boots, rain gear, snow pants and a hooded waterproof coat and all manner of Patagonia vests and jackets. I splurge at REI.


Special order designer eyeglasses (I have a heavy prescription in one eye and must have my actual lenses specially cut thin to fit in the frame). I alternate with contacts. I’ve spent thousands of dollars on eyeglasses and I like to change my eyewear yearly.

Takeout. I calculated that my family spent over $30K on takeout/delivery last year. DH and I both make 6 figures. Cooking dinner had become a major source of stress and fights. It’s cheaper than divorce.

Also we never bargain shop for groceries. We get the expensive pasture-raised milk and eggs, the organic strawberries, all the spendy things.

But we drive an 11-year-old Kia Soul and - whatever. We spend a lot on groceries and clogs!

I know right, the other thread made me feel dead inside.

Travel - totally splurge on nice accommodations and dining out.

Spa days - I love to get a professional massage/facial every couple of months.

Shoes - I don’t get designer but I get good quality shoes (and probably too many shoes) for myself and my family.

Organic produce.

Agree with all of this and how this thread inexplicably makes me really happy. Art! Strawberries! Clogs! Kid tennis lessons! Trips! Who needs a new car to feel good when we focus on all this?

Fancy groceries from the gourmet grocery store - stuff like all the fresh berries, pâté, chips, the stupid yogurt in the ceramic vase, flowers, etc. I feel like if we’re living large in this way we don’t eat out as much and generally eat healthier, less prepared foods. Feel ridiculous though. We spend $1000 monthly on groceries for a family of three.
