But why are you assuming APS is funding this rather than the organization?

Different poster, but Ashlawn K went two places - to planetarium and “seasons of light” at the Smithsonian.

Jamestown field trip does not use APS bus resources. Schools hire a bus company (the coach buses) and the cost is shared among students. Usually about $50 per student, sometimes partially subsidized by the school (and fully subsidized if student has free lunch).

Every student is going to the planetarium this year k-5. 5th is doing overnight at outdoor lab. Most 4th are doing Jamestown trip.

Our school is not doing Jamestown for 4th this year (didn't last year either). I haven't heard about planetarium trips but that would be nice. Kid is not in 5th or 3rd so no outdoor lab.

That sucks. It does seem like a school decision. I believe our PTA Is paying for everything this year which isn't equitable obviously. The PTAs have been advocating to the school board to get them to cover field trips.

We’re at ATS and when my son was in 4th grade we were told they didn’t do Jamestown anymore

So in 4th we took our kid to Jamestown and the local area for a long weekend. It was great! But doing that in a day would be he11.
Also, I think PTA at ATS pays for field trip busses although there are very few trips.

The Jamestown field trips were awful. Super early (6am ish) departure from the school and late (9pm) return. You couldn't pay me to chaperone that one but there was always a wait list for chaperones.

I assume that means because there is something "unfair" about the schools picked. I don't care if my kids school was picked (we are S. Arlington) but it would be nice if the schools were spread throughout the county and kids who might never have a chance to go to a hockey game got to do something special.

+1 I think a little transparency about selection would be nice, especially in a year where very few field trips are happening.

Its for security... not about these schools being connected. There are some children of well known individuals (for various reasons) in APS.

Why don't they do Mt. Vernon? There's plenty to learn about and it's close.

My older kid went on a field trip to Mt Vernon in 2nd grade (& Jamestown in 4th).

The current 4th graders didn't go on any field trips in 2nd because of COVID. They should consider Mt Vernon if Jamestown is too ambitious or requires too many bussing resources.
