Yes, really, for quite a few majors. Lots of UVA rejects at VT.

My high stat kids safeties were UMD and Pitt class of 2020 (interestingly he was accepted at his targets and not his reach) and PITT and UMD were his favorites-he is a partial Banneker Key at UMD living his best life.
My high stat class of 2022’s safeties were UMD and Lafayette.

My kid's safeties were Kenyon and William and Mary. (High-stats kids with strong ECs, full-pay, no hooks, rigorous private.) He got into both and ended up at a T15.

For my high stats kid, safeties were very difficult to identify, because admissions are tough across the board, and bc of yield protection (justifiable).
I humbly recommend treating "safeties" with the respect they deserve, showing them a lot of demonstrated interest, and only choosing those that your student would be happy to attend.
Nothing is a slam dunk anymore, nor should it be.
OP here. I want to say BU will be my kid’s safety but want a few true safeties. I’m thinking Penn State.

Yes, they do. That is why it is important to show demonstrated interest. Lehigh is notorious for this.

Dickinson is still a safety, the rest of your privates list not so much
With a 50% admit rate, Lehigh is a safety if you are full pay and show some interest.

This poster used "we" for the people paying. I know in my house, my kid is not paying the full tuition himself, so if it's paid it will be "we" (me and his Dad) who pay.
