Why didn’t they just hand over their coats? They put their kids at risk just to avoid the inconvenience of helping the underprivileged and oppressed youth in this city.

Are you sure you aren't smelling the malodorous combination of white guilt and condescension.

Yes they committed a crime, but does anyone here even care about what systemic and institutionalized crimes we’re inherently and systematically committed against them? A lot of racists in this thread.

You chief among the racists for continuing to excuse and pander to people rather than treating them like human beings with free will who can decide what to do or not do.

No one died.
That's why you have insurance.
Crime is higher rural areas.
Anything I missed?

What on earth?? Good grief. What an absurd post that doesn't even address the topic of this thread.

Kids weren’t punching mothers carrying 2-year olds in the face in the 50s and 60s; nor were teenage girls carjacking people. Their fear of judgment by their community, God, a judge or all three would have given them pause.

You can spin it all you want and rationalize it in a cloud of nondescript data points but these are all depressing signs.

Ah yes, the 50s and 60s were known as a time of absolute racial harmony in the US

DC had a vibrant, thriving black middle class at the time, largely due to families who had fled the Jim Crow South and secured good jobs with the federal government that enabled them to buy homes and live comfortably. U Street was a cultural and commercial hub. That’s not to say there werent societal ills stemming from poverty, segregation and institutionalized racism within DC itself.
