It’s barely enough. Just have a nice stroll in the airport.
1 hour to clear customs

30 minutes or so to reach Amsterdam centraal
30 minutes back
2 hours to clear customs again and get to your boarding gate (at minimum) and since you won’t be checking in luggage or getting a boarding pass
So barely 2 hours to have breakfast

This doesn’t take into account time walking to reach the trains at the airport, figuring out tickets, etc.

Not OP but we were there end of December as well with 7 hour layover en route to Rome. Went into city for breakfast and long walk. Came back much earlier than necessary as it turns out - no lines at all (Dec 27). Did same coming back - layover in Paris - did boat cruise on the Seine. Take advantage if you can!

OP here no, we purchased the tickets to Ann Frank's house a few weeks ago. We were willing to lose that money if we did not make it out of the airport in time @ 18:19.

Hmmm.....we were just there for Christmas + got our Anne Frank tickets a few weeks in advance because they sell out in advance. Are you saying you + your family just appeared at a random time + got in?

OP here. I have completed the journey. I arrived in Amsterdam at 6:30 am I was in central Square via train by 8:15. Family & I had a quick breakfast & visited the Ann Frank museum. We are safely at our gate for a 1pm flight. All check points were smooth

Or you could just sit and chill in the airport. No way all this is worth an hour to get pancakes. After a 9 day trip too? No way.

Very unlikely it will take 3 hours to get back in- lines now are much closer to normal than they were in the summer when it was insane. I still probably wouldn't do it because it seems like too much hassle for maybe 1.5-2 hours of activities, with the associated stress/worry of making it back, checking flights/trains, etc.

The layover is on your flight TO the US? Then hell no.

If you are flying from a Schengen country, you'd still need to get your bags and go back via customs to go to the US. Also, there is a secondary security at the gates for flights to the US. Just from a time persepctive...

If you land from wherever and don't need to get your bags (again, what country are you going to/coming from matters - since you are hesitant to share this we can't help)

It will take about 20-30 min to get out of the airport depending on where you land and what type of customs you need to go through.

The train ride from AMS into the Centraal station is about 15-20 minutes depending on which train you can grab. If you cab, it might take longer depending on what time you land.

Walk from Centraal station to Dam Square or the "boat rides" can be anywhere from 15-20 minutes if you are familiar with the city and a fast walker. If not - it can take longer.

Many of the boat rides need pre-purchased tickets.

Another train/cab back to the airport and back via security and customs.

I go to the Netherlands twice a year. I'm experienced in the airport, the train system and speak dutch. I wouldn't do this - but I'm interested to see if you try and it worked.

At other airports, maybe, but no for Amsterdam. They have been plagued by issues.

OP, if you have flex travel plans I’d either build in an extra day to your trip (or the route back if possible) or table city sightseeing to a separate trip. I think it’s too much of a gamble. A few years ago we were in London and needed to head to Stansted to catch our flight to Germany. We got train tickets (45 min ride) that left 4 hours in advance (we had backpack luggage with us and no need to go through customs). The trains had a switching problem and we were stuck with thousands of others trying to get transportation.
We eventually got a bus after waiting for an hour and still missed our flight. We had to get a hotel room at the airport and rebook out of pocket of course for the following day. So, in non Covid, non crazy 2022 travel, and non just popping into the city conditions, at a “regular” airport for check ins, we still didn’t make it even when allowing FOUR hours of travel/airport time. Heed my warning!

OP still hasn’t answered this. If it’s outside of Schengen zone it’s a complete no go but I honestly wouldn’t attempt it even if your destination is within. There are too many points (traffic there and back, getting through customs on the way out and security on the way back in) that could hang you up and cause you to miss your flight.
