Funny many W parents claim that they're the most represented at the Magnets so both can't be true.

Yes, I've heard this too, but half of Blair comes from TPMS and the TPMS magnet directory pre-lottery showed similar numbers of kids from most schools.

Mostly the TPMS magnet and those kids come from all over. Local kids had such a hard time getting in they had to create a set aside of 25 seats for the TPMS program to ensure that the local kids didn't have to compete at the higer cut offs.

No, you're a clueless hater and an idiot. They set aside 25 seats for TPMS so they could keep the program at TPMS when the school was floating the idea of not keeping the program.

The problem was that when the set-aside was established the program was so monopolized by out of bound kids that the local parents were screaming racism even though the program was working as designed to attract OOB kids. The 25 was a placation gesture for local representation so that would have to compete with the county wide standard which is pretty high.

Can you point to any proof for this timeline? The 25 seat set-aside isn't mentioned in the Metis Report and MCPS doesn't even really discuss it. So, where is the proof that it hasn't been there since Day One?

No clue, but it's been there forever. In fact, we moved to TKPK, especially for these opportunities. I mean that's what parents who value education do.

No not really ]it was like 30+ years ago. So much has changed since then. I don't think it really matters.

Anonymous wrote:So there are actually 500 students in the magnet program? 400 that competed and 100 that were all local admits? The official MCPS letter sent to college students made it sound as if the 25 local set-asides were the same as the 100 selected from across the County. Wow. Shameful.

Every word of this is wrong. Blair does not have any local set-asides. Also, what "official MCPS letter sent to college students?"

It’s funny how people move to good school districts and would never live in silver spring or within the DCC and yet expect their kids should go to the magnet.

People, you don't have to argue over bus times for Blair magnet. It is posted on the web:
https://mbhs.edu/newsevents/Announcements/BLAIR%20HS%20-%20757%20-%20MAGNET%20ARR.pdf

Many of the bus routes are not very long, while a few are longer. The longest is 77 minutes.

My gosh, your reading comprehension is lacking.

DP, of course there would be more out of bounds students than local students. One local area vs the whole county for 100 spots. Simple math.
Them bargaining for 25 set-aside seats was a genius move.
Well done Takoma Park, well done!

Nah, this set aside was created for politically connected children of liberal democratic pols in Moco who vote the right way. It should be called the MCPS-Takoma Park-County Council Industrial Complex. Blair Magnet is a political reward.

LOL

I can’t decide if this is an actual a rumor that multiple people believe, or if it’s just one poster’s favorite hobbyhorse. But it’s utterly ridiculous to think it was created and maintained for the sole benefit of maybe a few dozen kids over the course of decades, and the rest of the in-bounds magnet kids were just along for the ride. I’ve also seen people (the same poster?) claim the program was placed at TPMS in the first place for the benefit of the Council’s kids.

I remember a post stating this a few years ago. Guessing it's the same poster with an axe to grind.

Anonymous wrote:NP. I'm not complaining. I think the set asides make sense. If I had anything to grumble about it's these likely white UMC posters in Silver Spring who keep posting about how kids in that area are smarter than those in the Ws and then grab onto debates about anything related to magnets to bash on Ws.

I don't know if it's true in terms of test scores or other measures because I've never looked in to it and it's not a competition.

Must've missed those posts...
