How old is your kid (and how did you substitute)? I am thinking of just that. I was going to show him the disney movie, but thought that he (5) might be ready for chapter books.

The Plot by Jean Hanff Korelitz. So far it reads like a best-seller - well written but a bit predictable. 1/3 through and Waiting for a big twist.

The Elusive Mrs. Pollifax - again

This series about a grandmother deciding to become a spy during the Cold War is outdated, but still delightful.

I started listening to a podcast about Xi Jinping, "The Prince" by the Economist, and it sent me down a rabbit hole re: Mao. Currently reading "Tombstone" by Yang Jisheng, about the Great Chinese famine. It is an incredible book about a horrifying topic.

I just finished All My Brother's Secrets by Terrence O'Neill, about the UK foster system in the 40's. It's heartbreaking and infuriating.

The Nuns of Sant'Ambrogio

Weird historical deep dive into the abuses that went on in this convent in Rome at the turn of the last century. The head nun convinced others she was having all these visitations by Mary and other visions. This (obese) German princess wound up there and when she tried to call her on it, the head nun tried to have her poisoned. She finally got out, and launched a formal complaint and there was an inquisition. That's what this German historian is pulling together to re-tell the story.

I am making it sound more interesting than it really is - it's weirdly dull, despite the lesbian/heretical/Virgin Mary stuff. But I am finding it enlightening - the way that the Pope and literally everyone else wanted to keep the abuse quiet.

It's chilling, really... this is just how business has always worked in the Catholic Church. IDK why we were surprised at the abuse of children that came out in the 90s (Spotlight, etc).

Anyway, wouldn't really recommend...
