Don't let the doors hit you on the way out

DP.. So, what happens if all UMC leave MoCo?

No one’s leaving.

The top 50 taxpayers are responsible for a large part of our tax revenue each year, based on their capital gains. If they leave to any significant degree (ahem Dan Snyder), we will be hurting.

+1
I’m definitely not one of the top 50 taxpayers, but we moved out of Montgomery County last year. The current exec (Elrich) and the council was definitely part of our reasoning. I pay attention to these threads because one of our loved ones is employed by this county.

We left because the writing was on the wall. This council and exec don’t care about constituents. If they did, public safety would be #1 on all agendas. It’s not. Instead, Elrich and the council want to severely limit MCPD. So the county now faces exponential crime and limited resources. That’s the fault of local governance, many of whom just got re-elected.

It’s hard watching a train wreck in motion.

But you’re fine leaving the rest of us to pay for your loved one’s salary and benefits? Are you counting that as part of the “train wreck”?

Why wouldn't they be? If that person is working, they are an asset to the community, not a liability. Unlike our tax dollars paying for legal representation in federal civil immigration cases. Or funding housing for newcomers bussed up to DC (not even here) by Florida and Texas. Or funding COVID pay differentials that Elrich SWORE would be federally reimbursed, but weren't. Or funding $18 million a year to the Green Bank. Or requiring all new capital projects to be net zero with energy consumption, bloating the capital budget by 5-10% depending on the project, which in turn has delayed several school renovations that many people here are fussing about. Or funding all the hybrid cars for essential county government operations that have, at times, just cut out and left employees stranded because their range isn't sufficient for the actual daily work performed. Hey, but the programs "feel" good, even if they don't work.

Yeah. I have watched the downward spiral the past 10-12 years and it is just going to get worse.

At the end of the day, I have to care about my own family. We have directly been impacted by increasing crime. We left because we no longer felt safe. We also didn’t feel comfortable with the direction of MCPS. I’m an educator and I could tell that reality doesn’t resemble the picture MCPS tries to project.

No, I’m not fine with you footing the bill. I want you to fight back. This council is ridiculous, as is Elrich. You’re paying more for fewer services. Why is that okay? We showed our disdain by leaving. I suspect others will follow.

Doesn't it get dull posting the same thing over and over and over and over, year upon year? We know, the sky is falling.

DP but the economic outlook is not improving, it is going the other way. The county is effectively becoming an active living retirement community with large and growing poverty. This is not a recipe for success.

That’s my concern, too. I feel we would be in a different position if people were aware and educated.

We need to attract business. A tax base. As it is, we actively repel the very opportunities we need. Our county council will be busy issuing proclamations while neighboring counties are attracting businesses and creating income.

That's not what people care about. They want to create little bandaid programs that aid vulnerable communities so that they feel like (mostly white) saviors. Nobody has the intelligence, vision, or spine to really create the economic framework we need to provide a robust economy that in turn provides real career opportunities to people from very diverse walks of life.

This is part of the problem and for those that dont think rich folks won't leave, they will and they are. My neighborhood has had 4 houses turn over. Schools and crime were the reasons they left. 2 to Virginia and 2 to Frederick. We are leaving in 2 years due to being directly impacted by crime. Twice. I hate it. I wish we could leave sooner. We contribute a lot to the tax base. We care for our properties. We are environmentally conscious and educated. We eat out a lot and spend $$$ at local businesses. If the county doesn't worry about people like me leaving they are more delusional than I thought.

A whole county need YOU. Lol

believe me, even the doors do hit me, I really don't care. you may ok with your tax dollars being used in wasteful ways, but I wasn't.
There is no oversight which is why a couple county employees were caught stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars that we wont ever get back. The millions of dollars given to developers to build affordable housing that still isn't affordable. The amount of time coming up with ridiculous legislation and creating solutions to problems that don't exist. The schools, where my daughter is a straight A student yet she shouldn't be! so come on, you really want 4 years of this? Dig deep in your research and you will be just as surprised and frustrated as I was uncovering how tax dollars are used.

Nope, Elrich wins with a 72% mandate.

And we have a decisively left wing council. Only Friedson and maybe Katz are moderate. The newcomers like Fani-Gonzalez, Kate Stewart (Takoma Park always having its way) and especially Kristin Mink are just wow.

If you’re a moderate, what do we do now? The county government are soon going to realize they’ll run out of money to woke-ify everything. Have we lost our last chance to hit the reset button and focus on bringing businesses and jobs other than Racial Equity Commissar of Justice Task Force Analyst?

I’m glad that crazy Republicans lost nationally but I’m deeply concerned about the hard left turn locally.

Honestly, what would make Sullivan an attractive candidate? I actually asked this question prior to the election and checked out his website. All I got was that he was “not Elrich” and that he was willing to be duplicitous in not openly and eagerly revealing his affiliation as a Republican.
I respect Hogan. Sully didn’t offer much to work with in his campaign.

A lot of life's votes are against candidates. The lesser of two evils.
