Similar story here. School is in a small town, not much to do off campus. He doesn't drink and has an unlimited meal plan. I think the only times he's spent cash money in the past two months were buying Q-tips and getting a haircut. And he walked a couple of miles to the barber rather than Uber (which is linked to my credit card so it wouldn't have cost him a thing.) I feel like he's being too frugal but as he points out frequently, he's 18yo and living in another state, so he gets to make his own decisions.

Where are kids getting this money? My kid wouldn't have anything close to $100/week from his savings. If it is from parents, when does that gravy train stop?

Parents are funny. When I was in college we had three drug dealers in Hallway.

Two are lawyers and one a Doctor now. Their parents had no clue and also thought they were frugal

It's coming out of his own account from his summer job, so I'm not tracking closely, but I did look at the end of the first quarter of freshman year to check for red flag money management issues. $10 a day at dunkin donut. I told him to apply for a job there.

I have no idea. That’s between him and his bank account balance.

Keeping up with the Jones's has its price.

I am not that pp but my kid is going to school in a big city with lots to do and I told him I wouldn't send him there without also helping him take advantage of being in this city and the associated costs. It would be different if he were in, say, rural Virginia.

I grew up in a big city. There is always plenty to do and explore that will not cost you $500 a month. Most big cities offer lots of stuff at a discount to college students.
Naturally if one wants to eat out a lot or go shopping it will add up quickly.

Correct. He eats out/goes out a lot.
