Speaking of Arthurian fantasy, there's The Once and Future King, by TH White. If you can get the first book, The Sword and the Stone, in the original separate edition, it's even better.

For Jemisin, while I know her later books were more critically acclaimed, I really love her first two series.

Ursula Le Guin: A Wizard of Earthsea

C.L. Polk: Witchmark -- this is the first of the series, and they are Victoriana steampunk rather than high fantasy, but still tons of fun.

Captive Prince trilogy, CS Pacat.

Book one is hard to get through. Absolutely wonderful payoff by the end of the series. Book two one of my favorites ever.

Content warnings abound, but if you are ok with Game of Thrones, should be ok.

OP here. These are a good rec! Alas, I already read them several years ago during a major romance kick. They came highly recommended by a friend who knew I liked sci fi and time travel stories. But yes, they are just the sort of thing I'm looking for!

Yes! The Wheel of Time is kind of a bridge between LOTR and GOT. It's epic (and the first book intentionally follows the beats of LOTR) but becomes modern and it's own thing as the series progresses. It's 14 books, so it's long, but so worth it!


The audiobooks are fantastic.
