I could never understand why she was so afraid of her relationship with Aidan. I don’t know if he was the perfect man for her, but he was sure a better match than Big!
I have a friend who was dating a man like Aidan, and she pulled a Carrie and had to split. I think it’s deep rooted insecurity. Carrie too always seemed to toe the line of insecurity, even though she was so bold and eccentric on the outside.
It’s not deep rooted insecurity. Carrie was attracted to Aiden primarily because of his stability. What did they actually have in common?

Life was so much better in the before times!

Everyone moved to NYC to live like that and then when they got there realized how inauthentic it was. Now all those women are in their 40s and 50s childless and unhappy but boozing it up at brunch looking for their Mr big. But will never find him bc he's marrying a 20 year old and having babies.
But that's the point! That's what a lot of us did in our 20s/30s and that's what we thought life would be like in NYC. I lived like that (to a certain extent) and am now happily married, with a mortgage and kids. That being said, I look back on my 20s and SATC so fondly. It was a fun carefree time and I know what a privilege that was to have.
The original SATC was so good because everyone was relatable enough...you were a little charlotte, carrie, miranda and samantha and you knew people like this too. You saw yourself in all the girls and you saw all your dating exploits in their suitors. I disagree with the poster who said it was un Over time, the characters got too hyperbolic and it was just unrelatable.
On Big, he was written to be THE EX. The one we think about often, but realize we overglamorized then and in hindsight know he was all wrong for us. I think the writers ended up liking Chris North too much and kept Big around longer than they should've.

That he was even interested in her seemed inauthentic to me. Interested in a fling, sure. But the rest of it was just stupid.
Yes!
Big was trash. He couldn’t have cared less about Carrie or her interests, but he shoved his down her throat (remember the diamond duck clutch, or whatever it was that his cohorts’ wives carried that he insisted she have, too? Just one example.)
Aidan seemed to truly care about her. He invited her into his life and made an effort. He opened a bar with her best friend’s husband! He was mid-complete renovation on her apartment (in which he purchased for THEM!) He refinished her floors while she cheated on him! He seemed truly interested in her life (“Where you been? Who’d you see?”)
I take it back. Carrie is trash too. They deserved each other.
Aidan was too good for Carrie.

Miranda has a line about getting her nails done on Saturdays - but it does not look like today, where it's expected that women will have painted nails for any fancy occasion if not for every day. It really struck me because at the ancient age of 49 I have started getting my nails done, and I like how it looks - but also my lord it takes up a lot of time and money. It was refreshing to see them without manicures.

Anonymous wrote:Steve was a totally different person! He was reading HEMINGWAY when he and Miranda met. He was complaining about the NYU kids wanting to talk about (I can't remember what, I'm sick, some philosopher or indie band). Why did they Flanderize him? Is that a statement about how we lose ourselves when we get older - or did they just forget he's not an idiot? (See also: Dean on GG.)
It's been like 20 years since I was into it but wasn't Steve a bartender and lived in squalor? Bartenders are generally all unmotivated dummies who quit college. The mere act of pissing adulthood away at a dead-end servant job with no health insurance and no retirement proves you're an idiot. Pretending Steve's some erudite bartender because he had a book in his hand is pretty cringe.![]()

It's a train wreck. It's nice to read your summary of a rewatch of the original show because it's reminding me that the original show had some actual good qualities. The movies and AJLT are so painfully bad, like they took the worst things about the original series and decided they wanted more and worse. Ugh.
This is OP - and I actually sort of liked AJLT (I know!). But re-watching the OG SATC, it's just so different. The characters had so much more life in them.
The movies are an abomination. You're totally right - they took the worst parts of the show, and went all in.
