Thanks. I was hearing that UVA might be in this strange spot of being harder to get in EA than RD. UVA gets more applications EA than RD and many of them are from kids applying REA/SCEA elsewhere (so often top of class) and throwing in UVA since you are still allowed to apply to state schools.

NP here. Kid's CCO recommends that kid apply EA -- son is looking to ED at a different school that he feels is a better fit. UVA would be second choice but really prefers other school (which is equally selective to UVA but a better fit for him).

Does EA actually hurt a kid who can't commit to ED? Would it be better to simply RD? FWIW, 1540 SAT, rigorous course load with foreign language, advanced calculus and advanced science. Humanities major. Basic extracurriculars (3 sport varsity athlete with all-conference honors, founded a school club, but nothing national). Private school. OOS.

The reason UVA doesn't have high ED numbers is because it is relatively new - only reinstated ED in the past few years. Last year more than 35,000 students applied EA to UVA and significantly less applied ED or RD. EA application numbers at UVA used to be manageable but now the vast majority apply EA. If you want your application lost in the crowd, apply EA. If you are qualified and UVA is your first choice, ED is now by far the way to go.

They have only had ED for the past few years, I think starting with the class of 2020 (other than also having done it many years ago). It's still the way to go if you want to get into UVA, just like all other schools that offer ED. They have less stats to say how its playing out but it's definitely a bump and if a kid wants to go there, no brainer, ED is the way to go.

WTH? Seriously?

UVA actually accepts women at roughly the same percentage as men, resulting in more female students. So it’s not like the schools like Brown where they take very disparate application pools (10,000 more female applicants) and try to make them about 50-50. I’ve read female applicants are stronger on average at many schools so there might be a slight bump but not a big one like at many private schools where girls barely have a chance.

An 8 to 10 point higher admission rate is definitely a bump.

I think your high school admissions officer is wrong. See comment above about Dean J’s comment re being easier to get in RD if you are across the board high stats

Do, but I don’t think first poster is correct. At our info session, they gave admission rates for ED, EA and RD for both in and out of state applicants. ED acceptance rates were 8 to 10 points higher than RD for both groups.

Sorry for the naive question - the scores that are mentioned here, are they superscores or scores from one test?
