If subs were paid better, it wouldn’t be as problematic for teachers to take time off.

They want you to teach them how to tie their shoelaces and zip their coats instead.
At our public school they don't allow parent volunteers at all except at evening events so there is no contact with the teachers. They ask for Amazon wish list contributions.

At our school it's just the opposite. The kids that are ahead just get ignored so the teacher has even less work to do. My kid's teacher, for example, has taken 4-5 personal days this month on top of the many holidays. Personally, I have to not only supplement I have to teach them to read and do math since the school mostly neglects them.

A teacher has a whole life outside of of your student? *gasp* the horror. You have zero idea why they took off and let’s be real- a few days without a teacher in elementary doesn’t mean you need take on anything. The hysterics… get a grip.

+1
A teacher in my department just took four days off because of the death of a family member.

I’ll be taking leave soon for surgery. Of course it would be more ideal if I could wait until a school break, but my pesky body decided not to respect the school calendar.

Teachers take leave most often because they HAVE to. Most of us avoid taking leave because sun plans take so much work.

My father in law was dying in the hospital last year and I was asked if I could come in the next day because of no subs. I did it and I regret it to this day because he passed that morning. I refuse to give MCPS anymore of myself ever again. I took the proper bereavement leave and I won't look back. If parents have a problem with teachers taking off, remember we are human beings. We have full lives outside of school.

When my 55 yr old mother had a stroke, I took a few days off to arrange for her to go to a long-term rehab center. I also had to figure out what to do with her dog. Please do not assume anything. I rarely take days off for myself. It's mostly for my own child and now, my mom. I'm a single parent so I'm the only one keeping all of the balls in the air at the same time. Most years are smooth sailing but last year was a lot.
