Every thread on this subject is the same old same old, mostly from people who have no current or former experience with scouts. My kids decided not to go into boy scouts, but they really did enjoy their time in cub scouts. Hiking, camping, pinewood derby, and generally being outdoors and having fun with other kids. What more could you ask for.

They only did these things because they got caught. They knew and have always known. The call did not come from inside the house. Now they are moving money and assets around to keep them from the victims and while they ALLOW lgbt scouts and leaders (how kind of them to allow them) they still allow councils to exclude them if they wish. And they continue to withhold files and information. If they were sorry. If they were more concerned about the 82K abused boys they would behave very differently. The people who continue to make excuses for them are as repugnant as they are.

Exactly. What more should they have done? It would be very politicized to NOT invite Trump if they had a standing policy of inviting every president. I cannot stand trump but do not want apolitical groups like Scouts to take political sides.

Exactly the same for me. It wasn’t even that Trump was there (which is pretty bad in and of itself) but rather the weak response of the adult leaders when faced with the Trump brand of partisan hate against Obama.

As has been mentioned, the local organization is extremely "franchised". Churches only sponsor a small percentage of scout packs and dens. The majority of packs and dens are unaffiliated with churches or only conduct their meetings at churches with no church representation involved in the pack leadership. We belong to one of the non-affiliated packs and we've had a number of people who have switched from a nearby pack that was more church-managed.

The scouting experience varies greatly from pack to pack. As also mentioned, the pack leadership will make a completely difference experience from pack to pack.

The good thing about the current Scouts USA is that you can visit packs and attend meetings to get a feel for the leadership style, or you can join one pack and if the leadership style does not suit you, you can either ask around or you can visit around to find a pack that does suit your style. It is easy to switch packs without Scouts USA. We started by having our kids ask around kids at school and other activities until they found a pack that their friends and friends' parents liked (and we talked to the parents). Once we found a pack that we liked, we joined it and have been very pleased. Like the one PP said, our pack talked about religion in generic terms and for any religious requirements, they give the Scouts USA guidelines for religion to the parents and ask the parents to vouch for whether the scout has completed the sections on devotions. The devotion requirements are moral based and not religiously affiliated, so the parents get to decide how their scouts complete those sections within the guidelines. We have scouts of various faiths (including Judaic, Muslim, and atheistic) as members of our pack. And frankly, unless the parents say, most of the scouts, the pack does not know what faith, if any, the scouts follow.
