Also a suburbanite mom here and in my circle we do not discuss this and we would absolutely wear our jewelry into DC. I’m not going into neighborhoods where I would worry about it.
I do have a costume version of my engagement ring that I wear when we go to the beach or Europe. The beach because if the sand in the setting but I have multiple friends who have had issues with their jewelry in Europe- mugging, pickpocketing and people breaking into hotel rooms in very nice hotels.

I usually wear fake jewelry even when I attend weddings in fancy places because our culture's love for real jewelry is well known and we become targets. I have heard people being robbed in the parking lots of fancy hotels where wedding celebrations are being held.
I’m South Asian also and live in DC, so I wear my jewelry everyday. Obviously not the overly ornate pieces, but still 22k and diamonds. I understand your safety concerns, but there is something sad about owning such beautiful jewelry and wearing fake pieces instead.

Quoting myself. It seems like I am friends with overly paranoid old nervous middle age parents who use the dangers of DC as excuses to never go out anymore. DH and I am included in that group. I need to put on my jewelry and go out again. Maybe it’s time for all of us to venture out of the burbs.
