Let me speed this thread up in its likely trajectory:

These kids prep.

My kid doesn't.

The kids who prep don't deserve what they have.

My kid is smart and they probably should have been in the magnet.



In all seriousness my kid is friends with a lot of these kids. My kid only scores in about 260s so far (hasn't finished last week's test yet). As they tell it, tons of these kids are just genuinely very very interested in math and have a blast doing math at lunch. While I'm sure some do prep, why is it so hard to believe some are just really into math? And why would you belittle or begrudge that? Doesn't it make sense that these kids would find their way to TPMS and find each other and excel? Their high scores don't threaten you. Get over it!

DC scored in the upper 280s in 6th grade, but they were just in regular AIM. Our school, TPMS, doesn't allow kids to skip into Algebra unless they'd already taken AIM.

I've heard many of the students from the wealthier schools take Geometry in 7th. This apparently gives them another advantage.

Enough with the drama. Kids in some DCC schools also take it.

The data someone linked yesterday showed MCPS had a top score of 288 in 6th, 315 in 7th, and 324 in 8th.

Hmm…only way to prepare is to be strong in fundamentals. Some of which kids may forget over the summer. 268 is a great score. Just go back and revise older topics next time. You son in possibly right though. But I am sure he will do fine. It is not a difficult test but a good one as it tests comprehensive understanding of the topics.

People have no reason to lie. I bet there are very, very few that do. But there is bias in responding - the high scorers, like the high earners, love to reply to these threads.
