not true at all. Read "history" here. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mensa_International

+1. And no one in Mensa would use "gross" to describe an entity's history.

Actually, Mensa offers a lot to its members. There are social groups; hobby groups; singles groups; volunteer opportunities, and indeed scholarships.

Appreciate those leading with thoughtful and helpful feedback. Sad for those that are coming from place of unkindness and took the time to post a snarky comment instead of being kind. I’m sure many could list it and I was inquiring if it’s helpful or not. No need to be mean. That helps no one.

NP. Have you considered that others might find YOUR post unkind? When people say “it isn't that special,” they might mean “it isn’t that special and your question seems to assume that your DC is more special than mine,” which is inherently unkind. Kind and polite are not the same thing. I find your question a little unkind and some of the prior posts maybe impolite but not unkind.

Yes! I agree with these comments.

Last time I checked the Mensa requirements you could get in with something like being 98th percentile on standardized tests. Thats a huge number of kids applying to selective schools. I think mentioning it would seem naive and silly.

I never knew I was so smart. LOL And I seriously have lost brain cells since then (3 kids and peri menopause)

SAT
taken prior to 9/30/1974 1300
taken from 9/30/1974 to 1/31/1994 1250
taken after 1/31/1994 Not accepted

LOL! I thought it was just a rumor that the SAT got easier? I guess this implies that it actually did.

Mensa is “a group that has, unfortunately, become frequented by underachievers from modest backgrounds, with extensive interest in playing games that prove they’re intelligent but who have little achievement otherwise. For a lot of people, being in Mensa is a major part of their identity because it tells the world that they’re smart, even if they don’t show it in any other way.”

To answer the question “Why do studies of Mensa members show poor outcomes despite high intelligence when the highly intelligent tend to do well in basically every way?” we now have two answers:

Mensa members are self-selected to be high-IQ losers.

Due to mismeasurement, Mensa members aren’t as smart as they believe they are.

Does being a Mensa member signal intelligence? Sure, but not high intelligence. And unfortunately, it probably signals being a weirdo who wastes their time playing games much more than it signals being someone smart.

People with negative responses without insight are just jealous of your child, I would ignore those comments.

No, OP. It's something people do when they don't live up to their potential. Say they are in Mensa.

Yep, just looked up the chart and my old GRE puts me in too.
I didn't know there are any scholarships associated with it though. If that truly is a thing, I guess I could dig up my kids' WISC and see if he wants to join. Not really sure it's worth it though if you have to pay for the membership.

I got 800 on GRE verbal, 720 analytical, 700 math. Can I join?

Oh, I see that would definitely get me in. Plus my IQ score would qualify. I had no idea.

My 1995 GRE would get me in. It never occurred to me that Mensa's standards were low enough to accept people like me.

OP, I hope this is a joke. As so many posters have mentioned, if your kid is smart, his/her course rigor, grades, test scores, and overall awards and achievements will make the case. I find it incredible that you and your smart kid did not already know that.
