My mom “just makes conversation” like this. It’s negative, draining, and relentless. If anyone calls her out or reacts she’s all “what? I can’t express my opinion?”. It’s a non-subtle form of gaslighting that makes us not want to be around her, and that makes me sad.

We have affection for each other. I'm not defending MIL behavior, that's an individual and personal thing, but it is really ridiculous on here how DILs can't seem to stop.

You are taking this very seriously. I can't say I would begrudge someone wanting a pet and I wouldn't then try to control them by saying I won't visit them if they get it. Would you not visit your child if they bought something you didn't like? I would say in this case the MIL is whining and intolerant and I would say her reaction to someone getting a pet is ridiculous. A simpler solution would be if she is scared of the dog, it can go outside or in another room while she visits or she stays in a hotel or she doesn't have to visit, no one is forcing her to do anything.

I usually look with a jaundiced eye at some of the MIL hate threads, but it's just wrong for this MIL to crap on the parade of her son's family looking forward to having a dog in their life that they will all love. COME ON,MIL.

lol! I love this thread. My MIL is a misogynist and a racist and is well aware (because I told her) that I will send her to a hotel if she spews her hate in my house. My husband always drops her off at the airport and comes home amazed at the horrible things she says in the car on the way. It's like she just can't hold it in anymore. I don't know why she thinks it's ok to say it in front of him! He married me! She's a piece of work.

Well, one thing I won’t do is complain to my son about his unavoidable travel during my visit, saying “I forget you even live in this house. I can’t depend on you for anything.”

I am sure you will do something to drive your DIL crazy.

I’m sure I will, but my MIL gives me a lot of opportunities to learn what not to do.

We were all at a restaurant last year. MIL is sitting in between my daughter, who was 4 at the time, and my nephew, who was then 8. My daughter was being a little hyper and my nephew said “wow she’s crazy!” MIL said to him, “You’ll find women will be crazy throughout your life and do unpredictable things. But never grandma. Here’s another one: MIL and FIL are flying out on Sunday. DH has to leave for a work trip then too. They’re all going to the airport together. DH is leaving fairly close to his flight because he has Clear and usually gets through security fast. MIL said, “Our flight is later than his, so we’ll wait at the airport. I don’t care if he’s late for his flight. We’ll make our flight regardless.”

I wish I was making this stuff up.
