It's not an odd amount to make, say, two big sandwiches or sandwiches for a small family and have none leftover.

I usually try to stick to quarters. "A little more than 1/4...no more...." or "a little less than 1/2 a pound."

I moved to the US from England and doesn't matter whether I'm shopping just for me or for my family, 1/3 of a lb is SO much better a size than 1/4 of 1/2. I always ask for it, I get a confused or grumpy look in SoCal maybe 1/3 -- -- of the time!
They seem to get more annoyed if I specify which fillet of fish I want at the fish counter, lol.

Just last week, I responded to a survey from Office Depot that I would be shopping at Staples from now on. The store manager reached out to me and emailed two $25 off $50 coupons. Stores do care when they lose business.

Not OP, but we have kids and they can’t always eat what we order from the deli due to food intolerances and allergies. We’re true middle class not DCUM middle class so food waste really hurts our bank account. If a store employee can’t figure out 1/3 lb, the store is going to lose that sale. And i’m likely to remember that say that particular Safeway’s deli couldn’t manage what I need so next time I need 1/3 of a lb of shrimp salad, I’ll start at my local Giant and just do all my shopping there.
