My "normal" mother regularly sends the kids boxes of chocolates for holidays. She's Italian--it's kind of the grandmother role in Italian-American culture. But I think she also expects the kids to share them with their friends. Giving a box of chocolates is a way to say you give these to the people that come over. She wouldn't really have the idea that anyone would want to hoard a box of chocolates to themselves--it's "company food."
But OP I would just graciously encourage her to send non-sweets--say that you're trying to lower the family's sugar intake--and offer suggestions. And if she doesn't listen tell your kids that boxes of chocolates are to be shared with their friends and throw out what is not eaten asap.
