Those are old rules. And depends on insurance. Geico canceled me under three strikes you are out rule. I was labeled unlucky. $48,000 in claims in three years none my fault. I guess they figured I am high risk.

Why call the cops right away? People should be able to deal directly with each other. Unfortunately it sounds like the other person is trying to get away from taking responsibility for what they did, but that doesn't always happen. We can't call the police for everything.

If someone won’t give you complete insurance information you definitely call the cops. Insurance has much easier time when there’s a police report. That’s part of the job of the police, if we can’t expect them to do their jobs then we need to hire more that can.

I was hit by a driver in a MoCo parking lot and the driver called the cops when I did not want to exchange insurance info (neither of our cars had noticeable damage, and it seemed like a waste of time to file a claim).

A cop did come promptly, and I was told I was required to exchange insurance information. So I complied.

Well, when I got home the other person had already opened a case with their own insurance. I returned the call, and I explained my side of what happened and provided my information to the insurance company.

The other driver never responded to the case, and I ended up "winning" by default. Ins. company ended up paying me $800 for an almost imperceptible scratch on my bumper (brand new car and bumper had tons of sensors so is $$$$$).

I had this happen to me probably twenty years ago - lady gave me her info after side swiping my truck. (Just contact info). I was visiting family in CT and am she came in all apologetic. Never answered.

I did it to someone. Gave them all my insurance info. Didn’t want it on my insurance so I dealt with young man. He burned me by taking it to a dealer who doubled price of the fix once he learned I didn’t want to go through insurance (didn’t want rates raise)

Lesson: ethics and fairness have been dead a long time in America. Trust no one. Pictures and police report if you are hit. Use insurance if you hit someone.

We had something similar happen to one of our cars. After multiple attempts to get the correct insurance info we said if we didn't hear from them in 24 hours we would file a police report. The provided the needed info the next day.
