My first was 2 (almost 3). He was on his balance bike all the time from 18 months to the time he learned to ride a pedal bike. Second was 4. Had little interest in the balance bike or the pedal bike until she went to the park and her friends were riding a pedal bike. No training wheels for either.

Mine were 4 and 5. No balance bike, but we did use training wheels. It wasn’t too much of a pain, just an afternoon at the park working on it. Then they got it.

All were on two-wheelers by 4. But we practiced / rode a lot

Fwiw 1st kid is now a competitive mountain biker and triathlete as a teen aso it all worked out fine.

Same. Both kids now compete.

Both kids by age 5.

Just say NO! to training wheels. Balance bikes / striders are the way to go.

Eight! We were hands off because she was so belligerent about it. She finally decided to buckle down and not give up. I also think she matured a little physically to be able to do it.

But had a balance bike and training wheels for years before. When she outgrew the bike with training wheels I replaced it with one without them. It took her a few tries to understand pushing off and stopping, but the balance was a breeze. I thought it was going to be horrible as she’s very easily frustrated, but really had very little difficulty. She did most of it on her own. I hung back, she asked me to jog along with her until she was steady. Really proud of that kid!

Adding we used training wheels due to her first pedal bike being very heavy, with a lighter bike you might be able to skip. No harm in letting them gain confidence with training wheels though. Eventually they won’t really be using them and once they realize they’re doing the work/balancing it’s an easy transition.

4 for average DD.

What helped: starting at 2 on balance bike- Strider is a great brand. No pedals. Little kids have a lower center of gravity and it's not hard for them to learn to balance. Then you transition to a real bike effortlessly (without training wheels!).

About 8 years old for both kids. Took about 20 minutes, no training wheels ever.
My kids had been using a razor scooter to and from school so they had the balancing thing down already. I had them on the bike on slight inclines so they could get used to gliding while sitting. The peddling thing was new for them. Starting and stopping definitely were areas they had to work on.
