I bought Jen's cookbook on how to make ice cream. It's well written.

The only problem is now I know she uses a cream cheese base to make ice cream.

For... certain flavors, you mean?

That brambleberry crisp is really good. The oats balance out the sweetness.

But my all time favorite vanilla is Kirkland premium. They have the texture down perfectly and a really good vanilla flavor.

I like the ooey butter cake one but it is almost too rich for me. Still, I am willing to try the other flavors. Sometimes they go on sale at Harris Teeter, maybe 5.99 or 6.99, I can't remember.

Jeni's Darkest Chocolate has ruined me for all other chocolate ice creams, forever and ever amen.

I don't love all the flavors -- some just have way too much going on and can be too sweet -- but the Darkest Chocolate is the standard against which all chocolate ice creams should be measured.

I also appreciate that it's a small(ish) business, woman-owned, and uses grass-grazed dairy, as opposed to Haagen Dazs owned by Nestle (boo hiss). I do appreciate that HD is one of the only brands available (including way too many pricey brands!) with at least a number of flavors that aren't full of food gums, though. It's almost impossible to find an ice cream at any price point that's not loaded with guar/locust bean.

I'll put up McConnell's Vanilla Bean as my standard for vanilla.

It's quirky! The best store bought is the one with the fewest ingredients, by the brand who perfected high-end store bought ice cream.

Lol someone from HD is posting on this thread. Literally nobody else would be promoting that hard

Not at all. When HD is on sale for 2 for $6 or $7 it is a steal. Jeni's is always 1 for $8 to $12. Jeni's is not 2x to 4x as good the classic HDs e.g. vanilla bean, rum raisin. I don't think it's as good even if they were the same price.

Note: I am not a fan of the newer HDs with all the weird Ben & Jerry's-esque mix-ins.

Thanks to this thread, I just made my spouse take me down the street to Jeni’s. We live about a half mile away from the one near U Street, I drive past another one everyday on my way home from work, and I had never gone. Until today.

The butterscotch popcorn was excellent and worth every penny. Thanks OP for the nudge. 😃

It's good, a little too sweet. Locally, I'm loyal to Happy Gyro for use cream mixes, though they are even pricier than Jenni's. We don't eat a lot of ice cream though so it's worth it.

That's too bad. I was hoping the sorbets would be tart and less sweet. I tried the Boston Cream and it was just ok. The Butterscotch Popcorn was my favorite.

I will only buy it here and there. The price kills me.

I tried one. Literally just a tablespoon of some flavor I thought I would hate and I thought it was stunningly good. I regretted turning down a serving. I don’t know if I had eaten a serving what I would have thought about the sweetness level. It intrigued me, though, but I’m afraid if I start buying it I might wish to keep trying all of the flavors.
