^^ oh and I lived in TN for a year. It was awesome - stunning natural beauty and each of the cities has a unique vibe. Knoxville especially is fantastic. Don’t hate on it!

Agreed. I usually vote progressive, but it’s nasty of OP to be so judgmental. Honestly, it’s one of the reasons my family left DC. I’d rather be around a political mix of people - even people who are politically apathetic or don’t like to pick a party label. It’s better than being in a community where if you aren’t hewing to the party line you’re an outsider. We spent time in WV and NC this summer, as well as liberal Maine and MD. It was nice to be out of the bubbles.

That doesn't make one a traitor. What makes one a traitor is wearing patriotic clothing while violently trying to overthrow a government and disrupt the democratic process. Also, the proportion of "patriots" who cannot use English properly is ironically high.

Men's pants are not sold in Small/Medium/Large. They go by waist and inseam dimensions, in that order.

We just went to Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg to meet BIL's family since it was half way between us. We've been 2x before, but I think that the situation our country is in right now, just made everything sadder (the confederate flags, the F Joe Biden, etc) and the complete lack of any COVID acknowledgement (we saw 2 people in masks during the 5 days we were there.) We had a good time, and it was good for the cousins to hang out, but I not not sure we will choose to go back there.

We went to Gatlinburg for a family reunion and rented a house in the Smokey Mountains and it was really lovely. Yes, people are fatter than in DC--that's the South. And people in DC are fatter than those in NYC or Europe. That's the nature of this country and the Standard American Diet.

+1 why are you taking inventories of other people’s bodies?

Poverty and obesity are highly correlated. McDonalds is cheap. Sugar is a great dopamine hit when you are under tremendous stress. Corn syrup and seed oils are highly fattening and also highly subsidized. Poor people have multiple jobs just to get by and cheap processed food is both cheap and quickly prepared.

Gym memberships are expensive and intentional exercise takes time and space not often available.

Empathy is free and abundantly available for those who choose it rather than scorn and derision.


+1 I'll add that I read once how parents still want to buy things for their kids that will make them happy. Since the idea of buying something expensive is to far outside their reach, they substitute with food treats.

Having grown up in a really poor area, I also think a lot of it stems from families still eating the way they always have, even though nobody is working a physical job anymore. It's all sitting at a desk but their habits haven't changed.
