I was with the OP ... I have a general sense of my kid's schedule, because we chat, LIKE NORMAL PEOPLE.
This is way over the top.
When it is our investment, we have all this say and yes power over how it is spent. Want to waste our money blowing off classes to go the bars and endless frat parties and end up on academic probation or suspension, we continuously monitor our investment. He knows the parameters of what we require.
I think you are misguided if you think he's not doing those things, regardless of your "monitoring".

My son always has a sweet schedule. Every time I text him he texts back, call you later i'm golfing.
COVID did help with that. One teacher got cancer and just cancelled class mid-semester, gave them their current grade and an option to bring it up if they wanted.

A child is not an "investment"!
They are a gift. You are entrusted with supporting them to become who they aspire to be. You may have taught your kid how to make money, but you failed woefully in teaching him how to love and nurture to adulthood.

ok so I am the PP that posted that. I will rephrase it, NO she shouldn't come home. Get a part-time job, or join more clubs. If she's 4 hours away from home, she choose to be in a non-commutable location. Let her enjoy college and don't expect her to come home. She'll come when she wants.
I say this as a parent of a DD two hours away. She absolutely could come home every weekend if she wanted to, but I wouldn't want that and neither would she. College is a unique time, she should enjoy it and immerse herself in it.

I’m close to DC and they share a lot with us…. What they are thinking regarding classes, minors, etc etc So it’s natural that I know their classes and their general schedule. To answer OPs question, DC is a sophomore with classes on t w th and they have Mon and Fri free. It’s a sweet schedule for the fall.

My kid (who just graduated) would discuss her schedule with me: what to take when (to meet grad & prerequisite requirements), classes she wanted but could not get into or they clashed with other requirements. It is a big deal to schedule classes when you are in college.
When a new semester started, she would share her schedule, so I would know when I might expect to reach her. I did not want to distract her with texts, etc.
It is normal if you are close/have a good relationship.
