Yeah you might end up shooting a dog or a rapist or something. Tragic! 🙄

Or yourself! Or someone's pet! Or a kid! Hilarious!! 🙄

Yeah loose dogs are a thing around military bases in the south. So many strays near the bases in South Carolina too.

Ignore them. I always do. Dogs never bother me. I am more dangerous than they are, and they know it. Don't be a victim. Dogs can smell fear. I am fearless.

Find a different way to work out, that's indoors. It's not the dog's fault they are allowed to run loose - I would not feel right physically harming a dog.

Running with a concealed gun sounds like a great idea! What could go wrong!!

OP: If you are merely scared of dogs but the dogs aren't dangerous, then I would just carry some spray. If you are living someplace where dogs have actually hurt people, then I would find a different place to go running. Don't risk your life over a run.

How can you tell if a dog is dangerous?

There are some areas where there is a history of dogs attacking people, sometimes killing them. Some places in Texas have this problem. I would not go running around those dogs. These are mostly unowned, unsocialized dogs. I know people who work to rescue these dogs - to make the dogs safer, and people - but if you're someone who is scared of dogs, doesn't know dogs, and is living in a place where loose dogs have killed or hurt people, don't put yourself at risk. Like someone else said, get a treadmill.

Most pet dogs are not going to attack and kill you while you are out running. You just don't hear stories about that very often, for good reason - it isn't happening. You can be irritated and even scared around those dogs, but unless you have a terrific phobia I wouldn't adjust my exercise routine over it. The risks of them hurting you are very very low. If you're a little kid or a very frail person, the risks change - more little kids are killed by dogs than adults, not because dogs like hurting kids, but because they are small and vulnerable. Be more careful around dogs, even pet dogs, if you are a baby, or if you are old and frail.

Also it's a good idea to try to learn basic dog body language. There are some online courses where you can do that. I know DCUM hates dogs and would shoot a dog before trying to live in a world with dogs who aren't always behind a fence or on a leash, but it will keep you safer if you can learn what to look for when living around dogs.

I'm not a firearms expert but carrying a gun while running, while you're also nervous generally, sounds like a predictable disaster for everyone involved.

^ But also, yes, you can raise a stink if loose dogs are a problem where you live. Get on Nextdoor and start complaining about loose pet dogs. Be a pest with police about it. Loud voices get heads. If there is a stray dog problem that's affecting your quality of life, advocate for your local animal services to get a bigger budget on the condition that this is something they deal with - on the grounds that the current situation is inhumane for the dogs and dangerous for people. You can fight for things to be better if that's what you want. It won't happen overnight but it can have an affect.

Call the police. Film the reckless owners. It is SUCH selfish and entitled behavior for dog owners to let their dogs off a leash in public.

Treadmill.

Or if you like adrenaline, minimum of bear spray - it shoots farther and won't kill them. If you are afraid of these dogs and their owners now, just wait until you kill their dog.

The Rockefellers gave 1000 acres of land, including about 25 miles of gravel carriage roads, to a private charity in 2015. It is open to the public and dogs are actually allowed off-leash on those carriage roads (not off-leash on the adjacent Acadia National Park federal lands). My pup walks or runs at least two miles with me OFF-LEASH on those privately held carriage roads every day during the summer. I cannot imagine living in the south for so many reasons!

What is your point? That you’re inconsiderate and trashy but luckily nobody has shot your dog yet?

I honestly can’t figure out what your point is.

I'd either get indoor workout equipment, join a local gym, or drive to a place where you can run outdoors safely. Avoid running around those loose dogs altogether, as it does not seem worth the risk.

my dog trainer recommends carrying an air horn. it will scare the dog and signal that you need help. but i wouldn't risk running in an area where it's common to encounter loose dogs.
