Not OP, but thanks for the recommendation. My own geography knowledge is pathetic, but I’m working on it, and this channel is going to help. I’ve only watched Afghanistan so far (which was great), but am looking forward to going through all the countries.

NP here and teacher. Disagree 100%. Sounds like a cool kid to me! My brother was like this ad a kid with airline facts- still is, and so is his 11 year old son. Both normal people.
Excuse me. Kids with ASD are normal too. But they have quirks, as does this kid.

Map puzzles. Thanks to the plastic map of the US that my parents bought me in ES I still see states by their shape in my mind's eye. Also get on the lists for events organized by the various embassies. House of Sweden does a lot of programming.

May have been mentioned but bookmark embassy day in May. Very crowded so you will have to go a few years in a row to get to a chunk of them.
Scientific American has an interactive globe.
Get his passport and start to travel if you can. Have him look for deals. At times, only one parent went.
Read travel articles together.
If you can find the old pbs globetrekker. Current, amazing race.
National Geography Bee in schools, then state.
Study a language.
Go to ethnic restaurants in DC.
Ours became obsessed about 3yrs of age with a fisher price globe. Now Speaks two languages ( us none), studied on a state dept hs study abroad, and now in uni overseas.
Not special needs. Had/ has other interests but nothing like geography, geopolitical issues, travel, languages. It’s just his thing and set him apart ( in a good way) but happened organically and driven by him.
