I would also recommend taking a look at what books are on school syllabi or summer reading lists. I read The Things They Carried after seeing it on my old school's summer reading list. It was published when I was in college and hadn't made the course or summer reading lists by the time I graduated.

+1 much more appreciation for the writing, the story, and in some cases the underlying commentary on society.
