Ask your school counselor. It totally depends on what 3.5 means at your school, but yes, lots of kids with 3.5UW go to excellent colleges.

Over 4.0 means it is the Weighted GPA, so unless the 3.5 OP is referring to is also weighted (not unweighted like most gpas we’re back in the day) you can’t compare them. My son has a 4.5 weighted gpa which is meaningless to me. if you look at his unweighted it is 3.8 or something like that. It is very confusing when you look online and they say the average gpa is xxx…are they talking weighted or unweighted?!
I think there are loads of options out there for you kid OP. Do research on which schools have great programs in your child’s field of interest! So many untapped resources out there these days if people only focus on east coast “name brand” schools. Good luck with your search!

If your a high school or a parent, don't freak out.
People on this forum tend to be mean.
Assuming that this is a weighted average, for a kid taking regular classes at a regular high school: I think the real divide is between super duper stars, kids who tried but sometimes crashed and burned, and kids who really didn't try.
A 3.5 means that the student was trying, turning things and learning. There might be 50 schools that turn up their noses at the student, 150 that may be hard to get into, and about 1,500 that would love to hear from the student.

3.5 is a solid GPA. Many colleges to choose from. What are the other criteria you are looking for in a school? Test scores? Potential major?
