FCPS starts on 22 Aug, and LCPS starts on 25 Aug, but the last day of school for FCPS is June 16th, while for LCPS it is June 8th.

Does anyone know why even though LCPS starts their school year late (than FCPS), they are able to close one week early ? I usually thought that if you start late, you end late as well. I am sure there must be an explanation to this, but I couldn't find any information. If someone can share/explain, that would be great!

The obvious explanation is that the FCPS School Board has larded up the calendar with so many holidays and teacher work days. The explicitly religious holidays make a mockery of a supposedly public school calendar, and the excessive winter breaks only make things worse.

It's clear that FCPS could start after Labor Day and end at the end of May, but the School Board would rather cater to religious parties as part of their woke agenda.

Surveys were done and Parents voted. I'm all for starting BEFORE Labor Day and ending mid June.

Kids don't need 2 1/2 months of vacation time. It hard on working parents, tough on teachers (1st month back is spent reviewing previous year content.). How many camps do kids need to attend? how many hours do kids need to be home alone? How many hour of electronic time do kids/teens need in the summer? etc.

Also so many kids do nothing all summer because they cannot afford vacation or camps.

But some of us can, so let us enjoy our summer.

Lazy!

Since when is wanted to travel and have a nice summer considered lazy.

It’s not lazy but policy shouldn’t be guided by the well off and their wants vs. the needs of kids and other families.

You sound jealous. Sorry you don’t like summer. Deal with it.

I actually love summer. I can’t just take the whole thing off because I work. Like most people. But it makes no difference if it starts/ends few weeks early/late for our family. But I can put myself in other people’s shoes and understand different people have different needs. But I know that’s hard for some people who are a bit more concrete plus can’t think of anyone but themselves. And you can still travel and relax with 6 weeks of summer.

They do a survey EVERY year. Long summers are always top of the list.

I’d prefer their 170 days given that the last two weeks of school in FCPS are garbage days anyway.

Um, or you just go to a crappy school? My kid was still learning and had fun the last two weeks!
