Dh and I probably have the same feelings about everything but he often can’t see the other side. Whereas I like to argue the middle of every issue.

Like abortion. He’s very very anti abortion. But then he can’t believe it wouldn’t be available for rape, disabilities, incest, life of the mother. He just wants to repeat that it’s gross that someone would be allowed to abort a 37 week old baby.

I grew up in a family that discussed where the next meal is coming from. They didn't talk politics either. You two can shove your privilege now.

We discuss politics about 5 minutes each month. Usually local politics.

Politics governs everything about your life. Everything. Clean water, clean air, the safety of the food you eat, the roads you drive on, the way your boss treats you, the schools your children go to, whether medical care is available to you and whether your doctor Is licensed and how much you pay for it, the interest rate on your mortgage, what you pay to light and heat your home, whether there are police you can call when you are in trouble and how they will treat you when they arrive, whether your car has seatbelts and airbags, whether someone with your skin color or sex or sexual preference can have a credit card or a certain job, the width of the slats on the crib your baby sleeps in, whether you have a local sports team to root for. Everything. This is what you are saying you don't care about when you say you don't care about politics.

I talk about food when discussing what farmers market I’ll buy from this week or what recipes to try, no politics necessary. I talk about transportation when I need to buy a new car or complain about gas prices-sometimes political. I talk about education when I discuss curriculum with teachers and do homework and supplemental education with dc. I’ll discuss health care with my doctors. Majority of topics don’t center around politics unless you want them to. I don’t want my life to be like that. If you do though great I won’t judge you for it.

So you've noticed no social/political (they are intimately related) changes in your lifetime? No changes in, say, the treatment of people who are black, female, gay? Were you alive in the 60s--Medicare/Medicaid, not a big change? Obamacare, no big deal? Changes in the way the second amendment is interpreted resulting in the country being flooded with guns, unnoticed by you? This little pandemic we're having, politics had nothing to do with how that was handled?

They always just seem shallow to me.

We don’t talk about elections, individual politicians, legislation, or judicial decisions. We do talk about issues, but not from a political perspective. We talk about the tragedy of elementary school shootings - how someone could get to a place tat they want to do that. We don’t discuss gun laws.

Yes, we talk about politics or issues that are politicized. We don’t always agree. We often emphatically debate.

Just take a hint he doesn’t want to talk about it and you won’t have marital problems. You’re blaming him for something you need to change.
