Subject: What school year - don’t move your kid’s school
Depends on the kid. I was quiet and socially awkward, and moved schools in 3rd, 5th, and 8th and all of these sucked. However I know plenty of kids who have moved at these ages and did really well, bc they are very socially savvy kids.
I’d agree with moving at transition times - 6th and 9th. It makes for a few weeks of awkwardness but there’s always new kids at that time. Never move mid year especially in spring. Most friend groups are set by then

Mine moved when I was in 7th mid year, 8th before school year, and beginning of 10th. Like you, I'd say I haven't fully recovered! 7th and 10th were the worst.
I actually had a smooth transition moving in 7th. It helped that I went to a 7-12th school so I didn’t have any more transitions after that point.
I personally think any later than 8th would have been a challenge for me.
That being said, I was an experienced mover with a strong family and am not particularly shy, so it also depends on lifestyle/family circumstances and temperament.

We just moved with my older one going into 3rd grade and it has been hard but I feel like she is finally settling in and doing well. But at age 8/9 she had some close friends she had been with since kindergarten and she still really misses a couple of them a lot. She also still talks about our old life and how she misses certain aspects. My younger one - who was in 1st this year - settled in immediately. I don’t think I would consider moving us again at this point unless we absolutely had to for some reason.
As a kid, I changed schools going into 6th grade (I didn’t move but switched from public to private because my parents thought our neighborhood middle school had gone downhill) and it was a truly horrible experience. I too was bullied as the new kid and hated going to school every single day. The girls were brutal and so unwelcoming. I actually went back to public school in 9th grade and was so happy to be back with my old friends.
