We ended up in North Kensington and have been very pleasantly surprised. Down to earth people, friendly, convenient. And as a PP said everyone raves about Rock View, contrary to the 3/10 great schools rating.

The Chevy Chase Hamlet is almost unbelievably nice (looks like a cheaper Spring Valley). Not sure if it's "underrated" or just under the radar. The McLean one is fine.

I had never heard of Wakefield until I bought a house here, so I will say Wakefield. To me, it's just as convenient/walkable as AU Park (or more so, depending on location), but AU Park gets all the hype.

I also think the area north of H st but south of Trinidad is underrated. It's cheaper than south of H w/ the same proximity to Whole Foods etc, JO Wilson seems comparable to LT, and it's more charming and attractive than Trinidad.

Brightwood. People always assume it is crime ridden, but that is really Brightwood Park. Brightwood proper is a really family friendly, somewhat affordable neighborhood with a lot of amenities, solid public transportation options, and proximity to Rock Creek Park, Silver Spring, Takoma Park, and downtown DC.
