I wasn’t Op, I was responding to OPs question with answer fo a Clemson (southern school with school spirit, about the same size as UNC).

OP's kid should focus on Virginia Tech and forget completely about UNC. She has no chance there and is setting herself up for disappointment. UVA is a maybe at best but clearly she doesn't want to go there for some ridiculous reason. UW-Madison is great but bigger and colder and no guaranteed admit either.

Not unless your definition of "Urban" is pretty generous.

Columbia has a population of about 135,000. The entire MSA, which covers 6 counties, has a population of 830,000 ish. Both Fairfax Co and Montgomery Co, have populations much above this. Those are single counties.

For someone in SC, maybe they think it's Urban. For someone in DC, it's not "urban."

You know the GPA is completely school dependent, right? UVA wants to see a kid at the top of their class with good grades in the most rigorous courses. That various from school to school. Also, the SCHEV stats are senior year GPA - kids taking a ton of AP see their GPAs jump significantly in junior year and again in senior year.

Also, anyone touring (virtually or physically) knows the UVA is every, every clear that kids should go test optional. The current SAT scores are inflated for that reason and have been for the last several years.

We are in Maryland and based on the love for VA Tech on this forum, and what I've read elsewhere, we will definitely look at VA Tech next year for my kid and potentially apply ED if what we see backs up what we've read and heard. People seem to love it, even more than UVA, W&M or any other VA school, though just my perception.

NP. They certainly do - I have yet to meet anyone who hasn’t absolutely loved VT. My DC is headed there this fall and is so excited. The parents I’ve met on the VT FB page have been so kind and helpful - LOTS of OOS families (all up and down the east coast, of course, but also CA, TX, IL, OR, WA, AZ, and more). Good luck! It’s a special place.

With respect to the campuses, the Southern Part of Heaven smokes UVA. The C’Ville surroundings, however, have really gone in a great direction. So many cool things to do 10-30 minutes away.
