I asked a VT mom about this recently and she feigned ignorance or at least claimed she’d never heard of it. I assumed it was a thing of the past.

Purdue is becoming a hot school around here. That can be a plus or a minus.

Did she visit the campuses? Stay over with a current student??The latter can be very revealing.

Join the VT FB parents' group and search for horror stories. There are some.

Are costs the same?
Purdue Engineering always outranks VT- sometimes by a lot, sometimes by a little.

VT is a more social crowd. If you kid is rah rah they may prefer that. If your kid is more STEM oriented, they may find the engineering-centric feel of Purdue more their speed.

Both campuses are nice. VT has a better geography in terms of outskirts but there is no easy way to get there other than the long drive.

Purdue overall is a higher ranked university than VT. VT is beloved by their alumni due to the social experience. I think Purdue is a tougher school overall and the alumni have a strong sense having gotten a quality education.

If your kid wants to go out west, Purdue has significantly higher name recognition, it punches above its undergrad weight in the valley. Likely because Purdue engineering grad is #4 in the country.

If your kid plans to stay DMV, VA Tech is known and respected and they will find plenty of alumni to connect with. VA tech is probably not as well known outside of the east coast as Purdue.

You may weight which one seemed to court you and want your student - vs. putting you on a waitlist. Of course VT tends to waitlist high stat kids so it's not necessarily an insult but it scan still feel like sloppy seconds.

Tough call - really depends on your kids personality. Both great options.

The honor code stuff seems like it's an issue of guilty until proven innocent and a really bad management process where kids are left hanging for over a year waiting for even a hearing, with graduations held up because they are informed at the last minute that they have to retake a class. Important to be really, really careful. Issues like if you are in a big texting group for a class and one student shares something they shouldn't, every person in the group is assumed to be guilty of cheating. You have to report even the smallest thing ASAP.

The Honor Code at VT is HUGE. It is not worth risking any infraction. I graduated from VT 35 years ago and I still fear the Code.

Purdue, Engineering

If the other option was a smaller school with smaller class sizes and no/less TAs as instructors for basic courses, that could have been a factor against VT. But Purdue is also big so it's a wash in that regard. And Blacksburg is certainly in a more beautiful location than West Lafayette.

81 SUCKS. My DD's boyfriend went to Tech and she drove down there every two weeks from NoVA until she broke up with him. It is very dangerous, I worried about her every time and would not let her go if there was any potential of weather, which there usually is between Nov and March. Her BF once was driving back to school and got stuck in traffic due to a deadly accident involving a tractor trailer. He sat there for 5+ hours. There are deadly accidents nearly daily on 81 in VA.

I-81 can be dangerous driving, and if you are allowing you teen to do the drive, I'd emphasize not speeding. I had a classmate killed in a car accident on 81 one August on his way back to school. It was a wrenching way to start the year.

It's in the mountains and the fall is absolutely gorgeous. Oh wait, bad things only. Hmm.

I went to VT and loved it.

Can you please elaborate on why 81 is dangerous? Is it more dangerous than 85 or 95? I drive down to SC a lot and often wonder if I should try 1 to get a break from 95 85. I’m an ok but not great driver.

Not familiar with 85 but 81 is way worse than 95. Curvy, non lit, only two lanes, lots of trucks and everyone is speeding.

DD is a good driver, I let her to drive to W&M but I drove all the way to VT myself, too risky for her.

That doesn’t make any sense. It’s a straight shot.
