I am not rigid about etiquette and love receiving announcements.

We have gotten these from the kids of DH's cousins. I like that this is still done and always send a gift in response. A $50 check is not going to break me and I value keeping relationships with extended family. I come from am immigrant family that would never do this for graduations - but we have our own traditions with gift giving obligations. Same concept. Different milestones.

I haven't seen one in years unless I was invited to a graduation party. And even then, it was probably an invite, not an announcement.

That doesn't mean I won't send a gift to someone who didn't send an announcement. If I am close enough to you that I would send a gift, I'm definitely Facebook friends with your parents and have seen your senior year highlights all year long!

No. It is not tacky. If someone doesn’t want to send a gift, they don’t have to.

It's presumed that they graduated so doesn’t really merit an announcement.

My sentiments exactly! Unless there are extremely extenuating circumstances, high school graduation is not an accomplishment. It’s the lowest bar if anything!

If you think it’s a money grab, that’s your personal opinion. Instead, why not look at it on the positive side and be thankful that they value you as a friend and cared enough to let you know of their achievements and new milestone??

Maybe it is a Southern thing. I get them every year, and I love them! I do not consider them a money grab. If I am close to the graduate or their family, I send money.

It’s a southern thing. I’m 67 and from the east coast and sending high school graduation announcements when frowned upon when I graduated in 1973. It’s absolutely a money grab.

I haven’t received one in probably twenty years. High school graduations aren’t that big of a deal anymore as everyone I know goes to college.

I'm 58 and from the south. Graduates were expected to send them. I received them from our relatives up north. The younger generation just seems rude.

It was a rite of passage to have to send them when I graduated back when dinosaurs roamed the earth. You were expected to send them and I didn't expect gifts in return. Lots of times neighbors went to graduations with you.
