No one ever shortens his name either. Not so say it will never happen, but it's not automatic like some names seems to be. I think the one syllable thing cuts some of it off.

Dan definitely but I don’t know if this generation even knows that Jim is a nickname for James. All the little James’ I know go by James or Jamie.
Most of the Jim's I know started going by Jim later, like high school/college. So I think its still popular, just doesn't catch on when they are little. I've seen the same thing happen with Robert---Robbie/Bobby--Rob/Bob.
