I have a very high risk child so we have not gone into shoe stores. you can print out the foot measures from stride rite and then order shoes online

I am 44. I had this similar thought for years. How hard is it?
Then I got a pair of Hokas and holy shit! I have been wearing the wrong shoes for like 35 years. Anyone can use a shoe measuring device but that only tell you how long your foot is. Where the comfort came for me, and apparently my kids also, is the width. Shoe train fitted my child with an extra extra wide and were able to tell me which brand carried those. I will never not go to have shoes properly fitted again.
A brannock device measures width.

I've tried your way during the first year of covid and miraculously failed 3 kids. Js.
NP here. It’s not hard. I truly don’t understand how you can’t figure out if your kids shoes are too small or too big.
For some it is. I’ll never forget the family in Stride Rite years ago whose child was wearing shoes 4 sizes too small. They were flabbergasted. I was flabbergasted that they didn’t realize it.

We get keens sneakers in the fall winter and wear the sandals in the spring summer. They last thru at least 2 kids and my kids exclusively wear these shoes rough and hard. They are no more expensive than stride rites.
Buy your younger kids new shoes. Do not pass down shoes that have been worn “rough and hard”. Their adult feet will thank you.
