Where did you see 38 in CS? It's higher on Usnews and csrankings.
CS is becoming hard to get in from almost every fcps.

Try having a son with these stats - they fare much worse than girls applying to CS schools, and not just with CMU and the Ivies. When my son was at TJ a few years ago, the girls in CS (fewer in number) had much better early action results than the boys, who oftentimes had better CS grades/ECs. Colleges have a higher acceptance rate for girls in CS, and TJ was a good place to find them.

We went to a CS session at CMU and they were looking for 50/50 males/females and kids from as many states and high schools as possible. Given the number of slots available, that made it clear that it would be nearly impossible for my (male) kid to get in.

What is all this woke bullshit? I was at a recent event at VT and the CS students were 85% Asian and white males, with a handful of girls and and even smaller number of black and Latino students. Show me one CS or engineering department in this country that's not overwhelmingly white and Asian. Go ahead, I'll wait. The numbers don't lie, but all the "woke" talk is just like stop the steal - total bullshit to push a political narrative.

I have no idea. I saw in 2021 college destinations, there were 3 kids that went to Georgia Tech.

DD was accepted this year to CS there and was thrilled. By that time, she had a few acceptances but GA Tech became her first choice right away. She said she’ll definitely go there even if CMU or Cornell accept her too. We visited it during the spring break, and two of her classmates were also touring it at the same time (she met two, there could have been even more). However, she ended up committing to another great college that all of a sudden offered her a full ride.

it is hit or miss like any public school. Some counsellors are good some are awful

I feel for you, my kid stayed at the base-school and had just under your kid's stats and didn't get in anywhere either but I know it burns when you see the profile of kids who did get in and they are lower. I think NoVA kids are in general penalized and quotaed. Also CS is the absolute worst at the moment. I actually have not heard of another kid getting admitted for CS anywhere yet other than my child. I hope yours have some decent fall back options. In the admitted sessions we went to (all schools ranked 18 or lower) - all schools reported that the average SAT was over 1500 and the average UGPA was 3.9 for the incoming CS class.

Yes, I get it. The reality-parade was a bitter pill for us living through it to be sure. Whites and Asians in CS are persona non grata at many universities you hear about. I think you may have a chance at Georgia Tech, if you try for UIUC you MUST not just pick CS, pick CS+(something and ideally not mathematics) no idea if they make you follow through with it but it was a lot of 1600 SAT 4.8 GPA with 16APs NOT getting into "just" CS. Do the research and find out which of those options they have the most room for. Look at Purdue, Wisco, UT Austin and UMD as realistic and strong programs. We avoided CA due to the policies on OOS (they hate OOS) CMU has a very strong program, 3% acceptance rate but I have mixed feelings on it after further study. It is NOT a fun place to go. I know 4.4 kids from TJ are used to Not Fun but this may be a step too far. Ivies, save your money unless you are hooked, there is no room at that inn and you will only bolster their rejection stats and lose money in the process. Umich, maybe. Focus on the sub-classes of CS too (I think I am assuming you are CS but if not ignore). Some schools are better at software vs. ML vs theory, etc. If you are thinking VT, they only take high stat kids ED. Its BS but its reality. Their program is 31. Its a fun school though, not badly rated and if you are in state, very cheap.



Have you even been to Stanford to see who is in the CS classes?
