Yes, it is. Studies have shown that the best deterrence to unsafe drivers is punishment that is swift and certain, like the kind that comes from human traffic stops. Camera tickets might be swift, but if you don't have to pay the fine, it doesn't matter.

And the massive changes coming to 16th Street and Connecticut Avenue disprove your notion that drivers have the power to stymie any and all changes.

Are you joking? First and foremost, why do you think it took 10 years to install these soon to be bullshit bus lanes on 16th? Because it truly takes that long to take away parking spots and paint the road? Lol, it's because drivers fight against and interfere with every attempt to take road space and give it to non drivers. The 16th St bus lanes are gonna be a huge waste of time and effort anyway because drivers will continue to park in them and DDOT won't do anything about it.

Secondly, better infrastructure and road design to slow down drivers is more critical than human traffic stops, though traffic stops need to take place to enforce car registration.

The Connecticut Avenue redesign was passed with no meaningful opposition. All the ANCs -- the usual boogeyman in the eyes of GGW types -- supported it. The 16th Street delay was because of DDOT incompetence more than anything else.

And if the 16th Street changes are such a waste of time, why are we spending the money on it?

They're parked in the bus lanes on 14th with their faces buried in their phones

MPD stopped doing human traffic stops long before Vision Zero

Not really. At least not with the police force. Mostly with developers.

I like the developers. The more they build, as long as it’s not affordable housing, the more poor people, who primarily are the cause of crime, are pushed out. I like the Grey and Fenty years of pro development. I like nice stuff. I don’t self flagellate. I don’t like performative wokeness. I simply like when things get better. Crime going down is a good thing.

Agree.

+1. Tony Williams was the best.

Vision Zero isn't failing because of a lack of traffic stops. Vision Zero is failing because drivers whine incessantly and throw tantrums about having to navigate bike lanes, ceding the right of way to pedestrians, losing parking spots, and having to drive slower, and so none of the physical changes we need to make roads safer are implemented.

The goal of a policy like Vision Zero is to redesign the streets so dangerous drivers are less of an issue, whether they're prosecuted aggressively or not. That's not to say the D.C. version of it is working, but it isn't meant to be primarily a law enforcement approach.

One of the unspoken realities of Williams/Fenty years of pro development was the concept that DC had a high poverty population disproportionate to surrounding jurisdictions, and DC needed an increase in middle class residents and a decrease in high poverty residents in order for the city to thrive.

Yeah, then you can have zero crime like in Republican run areas.

Yes, this.

Listing next week. Arlington or Alexandria here we come.

Please don’t bring your Democratic politics to Virginia so we don’t end up in the same situation in 10-20 years.

Arlington and Alexandria are barely less Democratic than DC.

True, but those votes still matter in statewide and national elections.

The only VA politicians acting like DC democrats are the progressive commonwealth attorneys. They haven't been making excuses for criminals lately since Youngkin threatened to prosecute the crimes they ignore. Actually very nice to have opposing views and balance.
