I second “Moon River,” and also suggest Elvis: “I Can’t Help Falling In Love With You.”

“Moonglow” (an older song, but it had a resurgence in the 50’s when it was used in the movie Picnic. Great song to dance to)

Neil Young’s “Harvest Moon”

If you want something totally unsentimental maybe “Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay”?

It might be too sad, but one of my my favorite songs is “Stand by Me” and it seems to be appropriate for this occasion.

I'll be seeing you
In all the old familiar places
That this heart of mine embraces
All day through
In that small cafe
The park across the way
The children's carousel
The chestnut tree
The wishing well
I'll be seeing you
In every lovely summer's day
In everything that's right and gay
I'll always think of you that way
I'll find you in the morning sun
And when the night is new
I'll be looking at the moon
But I'll be seeing you
I'll be seeing you
In every lovely summer's day
In everything that's light and gay
I'll always think of you that way
I'll find you in the morning sun
And when the night is new
I'll be looking at the moon
But I'll be seeing you

+1 to this song. I’m partial to the Billie Holiday version. But whatever version, it’s really moving.

It's a little more upbeat than slow, but definitely a happy sounding song: The Beatles, "When I'm Sixty-four." I know he is older. I still think it's worth a look. It's kind of cheeky.

I don't think I'd go with one that looks backward (I'll be seeing you) or has elements of loss (I will always love you). I'm not sure what would be best. I think you'll know when you hear it.

Anyway:

"When I'm Sixty Four"

When I get older losing my hair
Many years from now
Will you still be sending me a valentine
Birthday greetings, bottle of wine?
If I'd been out till quarter to three
Would you lock the door?
Will you still need me, will you still feed me
When I'm sixty four?

You'll be older too
And if you say the word
I could stay with you

I could be handy, mending a fuse
When your lights have gone
You can knit a sweater by the fireside
Sunday mornings go for a ride
Doing the garden, digging the weeds
Who could ask for more?
Will you still need me, will you still feed me
When I'm sixty four?

Every summer we can rent a cottage in the Isle of Wight
If it's not too dear
We shall scrimp and save
Grandchildren on your knee
Vera, Chuck and Dave

Send me a postcard, drop me a line
Stating point of view
Indicate precisely what you mean to say
Yours sincerely, wasting away
Give me your answer, fill in a form
Mine forevermore
Will you still need me, will you still feed me
When I'm sixty four?
Ho!

Me again, hit submit too soon. If you keep looking at titles and lyrics and are worried about everything, you could used the theme from A Summer Place. Wildly popular at the time and an instrumental.

And OP this is wonderful what you’re doing and please take care of yourself. My mom had ALS and we had four years to process it. This sounds much worse.

If you think it might have occurred after contact/ingestion with contaminated tissue, please follow up so you can assure yourselves that no one else in the family was exposed.

Neurologist thinks it’s the spontaneous type but I’m sure we will send his brain for autopsy to confirm. I’m his step-daughter but it’s of course something we’d want to know for his descendants. The contaminated meat angle - hard to say as no one really knows how long it can stay dormant. His disease presentation fits spontaneous type though, which just kind of sucks in its own way because it’s just…why him? (Why ANYBODY!)

OP I want to say I’m so sorry as I know the pain. I have had a family member diagnosed with this disease last week. Like your stepfather, one day they were fine and the next they have lost most cognitive and physical abilities. I’d never heard of this disease until now.

Thank you and so sorry to hear your family member was also diagnosed with this awful disease. Wishing you as much peace as possible during your family member’s journey.
