How about the Watch Hill Inn in RI? We did that last year and it was lovely.

These are good choices and OP really needs to be bringing her DH on board when vacation planning, as others have noted.

Why is it interesting? CT beaches are bad. Maine ocean water is cold. Hamptons - pricy and far.
Jersey Shore is a mood but?

For pete's sake you could literally pick anyplace else that won't make MIL feel awful and make your husband feel awful. It cannot be that the ONLY place with a reasonable resort is the one that's going to cause conflict! Unless you're looking for conflict, in which case, have at it.

I would consider Newport. But also, it can be a slippery slope with ILs like this. We apparently are not able to vacation in the entire state of FL now without "hurt feelings" due to a similar situation. Ridiculous.

Try to be kind, OP, and remember that what goes around comes around.

I'm confused where the Chatham thing is coming from, as the hard year coming up - neither detail of which is in the post.

??? There aren't many "resorts" on the Cape. Chatham is the only place that has bona fide resort.

Uh, not true. Pelham House is in Dennis. Wequassett is in Harwich. Ocean Edge is in Brewster.
Just sayin'

None of those qualify as "resorts" imo. DP

Don’t you as a couple figure out vacations? I cant imagine planning a vacation that my spouse doesn’t want to do. It wouldn’t be fun if we both weren’t into it. And it would be an endless source of conflict for the future.

The resort sounds lovely but at the cost of creating so much conflict, I wouldn't do it. I would also recommend Maine and just say that you are doing something totally different. It's definitely drive-able; I've driven from VA!

Your husband is the next authority on what would upset his mother. Doesn’t matter if you (or we) think she should be upset; the question is whether your vacation is worth upsetting your MIL about. Personally, I would head up to Maine.

Goodness, just book your resort. Enough already with the husband crap.

When you go in a family va action, don’t go to the cape

Maine is nice

You can always invite her to have her own room whether you pay or not

When the kids are old enough send one or two to Gma for a few weeks in summer
