At the next board meeting I will propose an adjustment to the school holiday calendar.

Winter break will now run December 26-Jan 2.
Spring break should honestly be later in March like colleges have it, not around Easter. Let's aim for mid to late march.
Thanksgiving is a trash holiday based on STDs and genocide, so we'll cancel that one altogether. Fall break will now happen at the beginning of November.
George Washington was a slave owner, so obviously, his bday is out. No more day off.
We'll keep October 11th but only after thorough vetting. If our spies find out you've called it 'Columbus Day' within the last 5 years, you AND your kid have to attend school that day.

I had a dr’s appointment planned for Monday and childcare lined up for Tuesday. So now I’m trying to reschedule things and may have to burn some leave if my childcare can’t be rearranged.

I don’t think I should have to possibly burn PTO and reschedule medical stuff to accommodate people’s religious beliefs. In fact, I don’t think the school calendar should be linked to any religion at all. And FWIW I’d be equally annoyed if suddenly Good Friday or whatever led to school calendar changes. Give people floating holidays instead of Christmas as a national holiday. Whatever. Just stop expecting others to cater to manmade beliefs. This country is too diverse to keep accommodating all this nonsense.

This is nonsense. Families need to be able to rely on the school calendar. Many working parents make plans weeks or months in advance often times paying ahead for care. School board cannot and should not backtrack on dates when it affects 1000s of families, and not just Muslims.

What’s the new ACLU? They should so over this nonsense. We need separation of church and state. There should be a secular reason for public school to close on holiday (ie excessive absences).

Yes. I haven’t met anyone in real life that agrees with all the holidays being off from school. We are a Jewish family and kids take off as needed just like they do when they’re sick. We don’t expect the whole school to revolve around our religion. If there are a sizeable number of staff or kids that will be out for a holiday then make it a no school day. And if it makes sense for some schools vs others that okay too. I cannot believe the so-called democratic school board thinks this aligns with liberal values. This type of nonsense makes me want to vote them all out.

FCCPS did the same thing and the school board just voted to move the date yesterday. All of these districts should be embarrassed. It’s not about staff making dentist appointments. Are these districts providing daycare on the day off? My kids are older now so I’m not following that anymore. If you have a small child, now you need to arrange for a sitter on a different day. I hope their school daycare programs are still open but I’m doubtful since it’s a holiday.

Christmas is always a holiday.

And the schedule is always such that the day after Easter is a student holiday, too.

Not everywhere. In FCPS the students had school on Good Friday and the day after Easter.

Really? So throwing in religious holidays, that have no secular purpose, into a public school is not state sanctioned religion? Christmas is not a religious holiday on the school calendar, it's winter break and has a secular purpose - it's a federal holiday and many non-Christians celebrate it as a secular holiday. Eid only benefits followers of a specific religion.

Same with Rosh Hashannah, Yom Kippur, and Diwali, now all on the calendar as well. All in the name of equity and wokeness.
